BCS: Now It's On
Of course the BCS didn't get it right just because the two remaining undefeateds are playing in the national championship (Jim Armstrong picks Texas, btw). If Ohio State hadn't shut down its offense back in Sept. vs. the Horns there'd be a huge cluster of one-loss teams with coaches pulling a Mack Brown.

But of course in the old system USC would be playing Penn State in the Rose Bowl for a likely split-championship with Texas. And no one wants that, although people seem to forget that USC split just two years ago and go on to say they're gunning for their third straight title this year.
And of course all of this could be fixed with a simple playoff -- eight teams over three weeks being my preference. Perhaps I just wanna party for three more super Saturdays, though.
Anyway, the Rose Bowl is set to be great. One for the ages, sure. Hopefully just as fantastic as last year's BCS Championship was horrific. And the smack is already flying from LA to Austin. Up first in the who-can-provide-the-best-bulletin-board-material sweeps, via SportsbyBrooks is former USC player and KMPC-AM radio host Petros Papadakis in Los Angeles:
"The only things you'll find in Texas are strip clubs, electric chairs and trash-talking white people."
That should do the trick. And this quote from Texas QB Vince Young via Burnt Orange Nation isn't so much smack talk as it is a promise to talk smack:
"They haven't seen the different guys on our team who are gangster. We've got some guys who will talk some trash. The teams they've played don't say anything back. If they say something to us, we're going to talkback and we're going to talk trash the whole game. It's competition."
So, yes, now it's on. And between now and Jan. 4th, check out the best USC and Texas blogs on the internets to get your fill:

Update: Sportz Assassin breaks down the Bowls.
Update: Actually, the BCS did mess up, according to George Coztanza.

Why the un-called for rip on tOSU? You could also say if Marcus Mexico didn't decide to choke in the two biggest games of the year, we could have three undefeated teams.

Statesovereign,
Of course, I disagree with you. You state that USC would be the undisputed champ in the pre-BCS world. While that may be true with regard to polls, it wouldn't stand up with fans -- or at least fans of the 2005 Texas Longhorns (or the 2004 Auburn Tigers, for that matter). That
Regardless, thanks for your comment. I appreciate it.

Of course this isn't the case. In the pre-BCS system USC would be playing Penn St. to finish as the undisputed national champion, since it hasn't trailed in the AP or Coach's poll all year. Texas would probably be out of luck.
Before the BCS no team had ever gone into their bowl game ranked #1 in either major poll, won, and not finished #1. When USC split its national championship it finished #1 in the AP poll and LSU finished #1 in the Coach's. USC went into the Rose bowl ranked #1 in both major polls.
However, the Coach's final "poll" wasn't even that. They were under a contractional obligation to "put" the team that won the BCS title game at #1. It is without question that if the coach's had been allowed to vote for an end of the year #1, that USC would have finished atop that poll as well and been the undisputed national champion.
USC is certainly gunning for its third title. College football is what it is because of history and tradition. Any purist, understanding the history of how college football champions are crowned, would take the AP national championship without hesitation above all others. Because it has been around longer than the Coach's poll, and certainly enjoys more legitimacy, makes the fact that USC is in a position to become the first team to claim the AP national title three times in a row that much more incredible.
Texas better praise the BCS because in the old days they would've been praying for a Penn St. upset for even a piece of title. -
Jamie....
Somewhere my blog has been linked to a NCAA board/site/something...and I've been getting quite a bit of traffic there. If you want to link up those "discussions"....here they are:
