The Mustache Bet: 'It's on Like Donkey Kong'
The Mustache Bet that we spoke of exactly one month ago is definitely on, with a slight modification. Here are the terms:
· The bet: Don Mattingly is Lush's favorite ballplayer ever. Will Clark is mine. If first-year candidate Clark gets more votes on this year's Hall of Fame ballot than the 145 that Mattingly did in 2001 (his first year), then I win. If Clark gets less than 145 votes, Lush wins.
· The stakes: The loser must not shave for two full weeks. At the end of that term, he must remove all existing facial hair except for the lip fur. (ed. note: Lush is 2-0 all time in mustache bets.)
· The timeline: HOF voting results are announced Tuesday, January 10th. The loser will begin growing from that point until Monday, January 23rd. Then he must come into work on the 24th with the 'stache and can't lose it until the morning of the 26th.
To quote my previous entry on this subject, "Lush is a single, severely post-college guy from Jersey who, according to my brother, spends money "on CVS Mega-Hold gel and the Abe Lincoln chin strap shaving kit." I'm a married man with a mortgage and a puppy who is oft-ridiculed in the halls of AOL for being "metro." Who do you think has more to lose here?
ESPN's Jayson Stark and Baseball Musings' David Pinto both weighed in on this issue -- Stark siding with Lush and Pinto with me. Stark also says the only guys who should get in this year are closers Bruce Sutter and Goose Gossage. Pinto strongly agrees on the Gossage tip and would vote for Jim Rice as well (but not Andre Dawson).
Hear Stark's take on the mustache bet and HOF class of 2006.
