I've Lost the Rare Mustache Bet
The 2006 Hall of Fame voting results have been announced* and, as Jayson Stark predicted, I am the loser of the Mustache Bet in a landslide. My all-time fave Will the Thrill only got 23 votes (or 4%) in his first year on the ballot, paling in comparison to the 145 (or 28%) that Lush's all-time fave Mattingly got in his first year. As I've stated before, their career HOF candidacies are near-mirror images of one another, so for Mattingly to get seven times the votes that Clark received indicates a ridiculous NY bias among baseball writers. But we knew that already.
Regardless, I'll own up to the dreaded Mustache Bet by not shaving at all for the next two weeks. Then, on Jan. 24-25 -- a Mon. and Tue. -- I will sport the dirtiest, sparsest, Steve Buscemi-est excuse for a 'stache for two full days. Stay tuned for pictures. Should be fun.
Related: Bruce Sutter is the only guy to get into the Hall this year. Gossage vs. Sutter ensues. Be that as it may, congrats go out to Sutter and Cards, Cubs and Braves fans everywhere.
