Hearing Monster Ballads

Did Anyone Outside of Pittsburgh Pick This?

After the Skins loss I was drunkenly explaining to my brother's girlfriend -- who's from Pittsburgh and wears a Bettis jersey during games, Steelers or otherwise -- that there was literally no chance the Colts would lose this game. Of course, I ended up 0-4 (0-4!) on my Divisional picks and suffered through a voicemail from Mrs. Bettis calling me a "[bleeping] bama" and singing some godawful song about the Steelers and the Super Bowl.

Be all that as it may, this was a great game. A classic game. There was Polamalu's interception turned incomplete pass. Bettis's improbable fumble. Big Ben's game-saving tackle. Vanderjagt's horrific shank. The immortal Peyton Manning Face. A dude playing with a freaking stab wound! Even my lady enjoyed watching this one, and that never happens. Anyway, here's what bloggers be sayin'...

Dave's Football Blog -- maintained by a fan who loves Pittsburgh and Carolina (pretty good day for that dude, huh?) -- says:

"On the one hand, you feel horrible for Tony Dungy. This was his best shot at the Super Bowl, and I really thought he was going to get there this time, but once again, Peyton Manning looks bad early, and despite turning it on in the second half and nearly pulling it off, even after all the extra chances Pittsburgh gave them, the Colts STILL couldn't get it done in January.

On the other hand, I've never been so happy to be wrong in my entire life. Pittsburgh now has one more shot at the Super Bowl, and they just passed their toughest playoff test in years. Now they have to go to Denver and beat the Broncos."

 Great tackle, Ben

Now, let the kicking of the Colts begin. First up, Big Blue Notes:

"TheColts went 13-0 before losing.  Naturally, there was a lot of talk about the Colts going 16-0.  The Colts couldn't decide whether or not they wanted a perfect season.  The phrase most often uttered out of Indianapolis was "it would be nice if we finished 16-0."  It would be nice?  You either want it or you don't.  You can embrace the greatness of a perfect season and genuinely pursue it or you can say screw the record and rest your players.  Tony Dungy openly spoke of not wanting to get his players hurt in meaningless games.  That's the Colts, Fear Incorporated.  Afraid of the Patriots.  Afraid of a perfect season.  Afraid of getting hurt.  Afraid."

Ha, he got a penalty to boot

Wow. Not a good time to be aligned with Indy but a great time to be anti-Peyton. Ladies and gentlemen, High Above Courtside:

"That's right, folks... Peyton Manning choked again.

For however many years in a row now, the media was handing the Super Bowl to Mr. October before he earned it. He then proceeded to block his own windpipe with a triple chumpburger of Failure, in a perfect manifestation of what he must know is his destiny by now. His repeated failures are probably taken as an omen of true winter by Indiana aboriginals."

Aside from the Colts playing rusty, I think the referees should be thankful their jobs aren't asked to be put on a platter and served somewhere else. Just like the commentators said at the end of this game, Pittsburg deserved to win the game. How the hell you overturn a conclusive interception into an incomplete catch should be investigated by the league, IMMEDIATELY. Matter of fact, most the games over the weekend showed very bad officiating, just none worse than that call that if the Colts HAD come back to win that game, I would be pretty sure the Steelers and Cowher would be demanding some intervention, and rightly so.

Just one more reason to validate scrapping some of the useless rules in the NFL and just let these kids play some freakin football. Get rid of the 'make one football move' after a legitmate catch crap. The NFL it seems is slowly taking common sense out of the league, it sucks to watch it happen, or maybe they just need to start hiring referees have some common sense to begin with.

0-4 this weekend as well. Ouch.

Fantastic games. Best quote: "Once in a blue moon Jerome Bettis fumbles there, and once in a blue moon I make that tackle." - B Roethlisberger

    Double true.

YES  i am not a fan of Manning .  today he performed poorly and the first words out of his mouth after the game.   the line didnt protect him.  when he picks GREAT peyton manning    when he loses the line is at fault.  i hope he doesnt win a superbowl untill he grows up and becomes part of a TEAM

At the risk of throwing my arm out patting myself on the back, I called the Pittsburgh win, although it didn't quite go down as I thought it would. In fact, I went 4-o this weekend on my picks.
