Antonio Davis Goes Into the Stands Like a Man

Update: Deadspin Will shares first-hand accounts of the incident on SBL!

Antonio Davis Don't mess with Kendra Davis

Knickerbocker Antonio Davis rushed into the stands in Chicago last night to defend his wife. Davis said in a statement after the game:

"I witnessed my wife being threatened by a man that I learned later to be intoxicated. I saw him touch her, and I know I should not have acted the way I did, but I would have felt terrible if I didn't react. There was no time to call security. It happened too quickly."

He was ejected and will probably receive a brief suspension, but who can blame him? Not bloggers. Here's what they be sayin':

Sportz Assassin:

"This is the Post-Brawl NBA.  It has been 14 months since "The Malace In The Palace"...but in the 10 weeks of this NBA season, we've already seen two instances of players and fans interacting in a "aggressive" way.  The first happened in Seattle....when a fight between Ray Allen and Keyon Dooling spilled over into the stands [well, those seats at courside] at Key Arena.  Dooling was suspended for 5 games;  Allen suspended for 3.

This Davis incident didn't have any physical altercation like that....or anything that happened in Detroit in 2004.  But the site of a player jumping over a scorers table....going up about 10 rows....then right into the seats was eerily similar to Ron Artest's path into the Palace stands.  Of course, this one had a much calmer conclusion.

It is wild that this would happen to Davis' wife.  Davis spent the last two seasons in Chicago and was part of that Bulls team that surprised many with a #4 seed last year."

The Mighty MJD:

"The NBA will react, and a reaction is warranted... but I hope it's as little a reaction as possible. Give him a ane game suspension, asmall fine, and then move on to doing something about things like this happening in the future.

Arena security is evidently not enough. After the brawl, I said that the NBA should have a security guard behind each bench, assigned to protect the bench and to handle situations like the one that happened last night."

Deadspin:

"A Deadspin reader happened to be sitting a few rows behind Davis’ wife and files the following report:

Just got back from the Bulls game. Was sitting around antonio davis’ wife. A fan behind her was taunting Antonio Davis during the game, and his wife took offense. She asked the man to stop, Antonio’s kids were at the game, etc. The fan said he has a right to say whatever he wants. At this point some security comes over, and another fan stands up to tell the wife to “Sit down and shut up.” She immediatly walked over to him and started pointing in his face, which caused the fan to grab her finger. It was at this point Antonio Davis jumped the scorers’ table and went up to the fan. There was no confrontation, he barely even looked at the fan. He merely made sure his wife was OK, and the situation was handled with security."

Finally, just for some added juice, this SportsJournalists.com thread speculates that Mrs. Davis is the new Mrs. Christie.

    Mr Davis ,
You have served REAL MEN across the world well and made us proud.
Under NO circumstaces should a MAN stand by and allow ANYONE to
behave in a threatinig manner towards his love ones.
Had you been of another hue ,the response might have been different,
but with that not withstanding ,I feel that all those who have said that you were wrong for going to your wifes aid are COWARDS !!!!!!
That includes the bias press and those "haters" that can't stand to see man of colour "get his " and lay in wait for any moment where they can attempt to degrade or slander you .
I say that the true culprits are those two fans that got out of line .
They got off easy ,because had I and the other MEN that I associate with  have been in the stands at the time ,those two idoits would have received swift punishment for disrespecting a woman and her children . No matter what color or what status she held .REAL MEN DO NOT DISRESPECT WOMAN ,especially with children.
Let the hate mail begin ..COWARDS !!!

I think that David Stern is full of shit.  How would he have reacted if someone had threatened his wife?  Antonio Davis did what any REAL MAN should do - PROTECT HIS OWN!!!!!!  Society needs to stop telling men that it is okay to act like a woman.  Any real woman would want a man who will protect her and not run scared like a punk.  If we keep raising boys to think like little girls what kind of future are we asking for?  If a man doesn't protect the women in their lives I'd check to see who was really wearing the skirt.  Let these men be men and stand up for themselves and their loved ones.  Otherwise the future will be a society of women.  Do you guys really think you could handle that?

the concensus seems to be that security was poorly lacking in this incident. Noone can control Fan and Player emotions. But Security can control the situations that stem from those emotions. since it seems to be happening more often, maybe the NBA needs to invest more of its Billions into a lot more protection for fans, players and their families.

As a mother it is offensive when people are swearing around my children.  It is disrespectful to me and my children.  I can understand why she was upset and her husband was right to come to her aid.   He sensed something was wrong. Axlerod should own up - he and his so called friend were out of line.  I can only imagine what they were saying...That f___ing idiot blah blah blah.  He's an A---hole blah blah blah you know how it is.  Well the staduim is not a bar.  Axelrod and his friend should go to some dive bar where language like that is exceptable.  It is ashame that people are just not aware that swearing, sex and nudity should be kept away from children.  Childhood does not last long and to cut it short is a sad thing.  People just do not get it untill they have children of their own.  I am not a prude and I have done my fair share of whooping it up...but not in font of the children.  Swearing should not be allowed in public and I think Axelrod should be the one getting the fine.
