Hearing the Strokes

The Redskins Hire Their Third Head Coach

Daniel Snyder spends so much money that KC offensive coordinator Al Saunders accepted their offer to become offensive coordinator even though Saunders was looking at head coaching jobs elsewhere (Oakland?). This makes three Skins coaches -- Joe Gibbs and defensive coordinator Greg Williams included -- who are getting paid like head coaches, plus Coach Janky Spanky (who may or may not have a contract in place).

As a Skins fan, I'm getting congratulatory emails and IMs left and right, and there's no doubt it improves the quality of an offensively mediocre team, and. However, this is part of the reason that parking a mile from FedEx Field costs $25. Plus, it throws off the competitive balance of the entire league. The Skins milk their fans for more money than any other team and in turn spend waaay more on their coaches (and players to a certain extent) than any other team. I've got to admit this the exact reason I hate the Yankees.

Regardless, fans are discussing on the Skins board and Sportz Assassin points out the common thread among the NFL's six new first-time head coaches -- they're young, energetic, cheap and... white.

Update: East Bay Grease (Raiders blog) is understandably pissed... at Al Davis.

Update: Sportz Assassin (also a Skins fan) is all for it.

I'm a huge Chiefs fan and I know what Saunders can do with a great RB GREAT QB GREAT TE and average WR's. Washington has all of those things... Portis the great RB, Cooley the H-back/TE and something Saunders didn't have at the Chiefs was a play making WR in Santana Moss. As for the Redskins QB I think they either need to work on Ramsey or get a QB in the draft. One of the two because Brunell as good as he's been for the Redskins isn't the guy for the future. Under Saunders tutiledge and a QB that can grow the Redskins offense in a year or two could be a very scary thing. Especially If that Defense stays intact.
Saunders is a Air Coryell protegy, he had Trent Green throwing for over 4,000 yards in the last three season. And has been one of the top QB's in the league in that same time span. Sure Green had his problems at first when he got to KC but he's caught on well. look for the Redskins to make a big splash in the next season or two on offense if Saunders can get them to buy into his system. He deserves a head coaching job... I dont' blame him telling Al Davis to shove it and take the Offensive coordinators job with the Redskins. This maybe the piece of the puzzle that Dan Snyder is needing to propel the Redskins into the Super Bowl once again. Everyone wants to yank his jock for having the highest paid coaching staff in the NFL and with Saunders coming in It's very likely to payoff big for him. Remember you heard it here first.
