Putting a Nice Little Bow on Super Bowl XL

Big Ben shaved his playoff beard on Letterman so I suppose it's OK to wrap-up the Super Bowl that was: Pittsburgh fans got one for the thumb, Seattle fans got really pissed at the refs and the rest of us got bored. In case you missed it, here are the two most notable items from XL:

1. The Stones had the onions to break out a new song with 91 million people watching.
2. The Seahawks made SB history by losing despite winning in yardage, turnover and time of possession.

Here to expound are excerpts of what bloggers be postin'...

· Saved by the Blog says it's not the refs fault the Seahawks lost:

"While watching the game, it never once occurred to me at all that there were questionable or lopsided calls. It did, however, occur to me that Seattle was outplayed and Jerramy Stevens has brick-hands... As Dan Lucero of the 12th Man Blog said on SBL, the officiating was probably fifth on the list of reasons why Seattle lost. The bottom line is this: Pittsburgh was hands down the best team in the NFL this year and deserved to win that game.  The refs had nothing to do with it."

· Sportz Assassin asks if this was the worst Super Bowl ever:

"In the pantheon of bad Super Bowls....it may rank up there with the Ravens-Giants [who most people forget ever happened].  Many people will put it up there with the Colts-Cowboys Super Bowl V that was so sloppy....but that game was saved with a late FG to win the game.  The Broncos-Falcons game was pretty bad as well....but had the Elway factor to it. But it may not be as bad as Super Bowl VIthat theCowboys beat the Dolphins 24-3.  The three points is the lowest total in Super Bowl history.  Roger Staubach was MVP with just 119 yards passing.  Of course this game jump started the Cowboys' place as America's Team.....andjump started the Dolphins into the next season where they went 17-0."

· Don't Score Too Quickly concurs with Sportz' assessment:

"The game resembled a very old man geeked on Viagra -- as soon as 3/4 mast was reached, biology defeated modern medicine with fla results"

· Blitzburgh casts an MVP vote to someone other than Hines Ward or the officials:

"The play of the game, in my eyes, is when Ben tossed the ball to Parker, who handed off to Randle El, who, off his FRIGGIN 'BACK FOOT, tossed a PERFECT pass to Hines Ward for a TD, and a 21-10 lead. That pass by the way, was the first ever touchdown pass by a wide receiver in the Super Bowl. I voted for Randle El for the MVP, because he came through with a ton of crucial plays--including several first down conversions, the amazing pass, and a couple good returns."

· George Coztanza sheds light on an aspect of the game that was glaring while it was lost in the fallout:

"The least valuable player aside from Jerramy Stevens was Tom Rouen. Seattle's punter had 4 chances to pin the Steelers deep in their own territory. Every time he kicked the ball into the endzone. This is the kind of thing that will be overlooked in the final analysis of the game. However, flipping field position could have changed the game. Rouen is like every Seattle Seahawk. The team did not execute and do the little things like a champion needs to."

· Premature Jockularity is less than impressed:

"The Steelers didn't bring their A game, butit was good enough to win. Steve Young summed it up best: "This championship was won in Indianapolis and Denver."

· Big Blue Notes looks at SB XL from a Giants fan's perspective:

"Well, we passed on Roethlisberger to trade for Manning and Ben just won a ring.  We passed on Shawn Alexander to draft Ron Dayne and Alexander was the NFL's MVP and made to today's game.  We did sign Plaxico Burress away from the Steelers this year.  And he disappeared from games right about the time the Steelers run to win this game started.  Damn."

· Bucs Blog is reminded of games gone past by the SB XL officiating:

"I'm not trying to say the Bucs would have won otherwise, or ran the table, nor am I even remotely trying to say the Bucs didn't benefit from some *questionable* calls  during the regular season-- but we "shoulda" at least gotten the chance to go to Chicago and lose (if that was what was meant to be).  NOT for the game to be decided by the damn Zebras."

· Detroit Sports Blog gets the final word:

"The real winner this weekend was DETROIT.  They proved that this is a fun city. Good Eats, Good Drinks, Great Parties, Atmosphere. They had it all.  Security was phenominal and the weather cooperated for the most part.  I hope this helps curb the image of Detroit. I love my city and from what i have been hearing most people left loving it too. Big Props to the D."

It just goes to show you the Steelers will beat anyone even playing their B game. Seattle your new at this superbowl stuff. I guess it is ok to blame the refs when you lose instead of just saying we didn't get it done. You'll learn (maybe).

    From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
    http://www.post-gazette.com/
Hundreds of thousands jam city streets for victory parade

An estimated quarter million Steelers fans streamed into Downtown Pittsburgh today to be part of the victory parade and rally to honor the Super Bowl champions.

Roads and public transportation were overwhelmed by the large number of people making their way Downtown. Parking was at a premium -- in terms of availability and price with some lot owners hiking rates -- some sharply -- to cash in on the extra business.

Coach Bill Cowher took the reviewing stand at noon, shouting, "How great it is!" He saluted the fans, owner Dan Rooney and the city.

The parade included marching bands, mounted police and an honor guard.

    How's that Seattle parade going?

You know it's going to be a bad Super Bowl when the fat lady is singing BEFORE the game.
