Gretzky, Gambling, Yada Yada Yada... Hey, Watch This Check!
The NHL gambling ring is interesting for more than a few reasons: 1) The Great One was so unfortunately involved, 2) Mrs. Gretzky plays big ($75k on the Super Bowl alone), 3) 'Operation Slapshot' is a really funny name, 4) the ring was run by a NJ state trooper and 5) we don't know yet whether anyone involved actually bet on hockey.
Personally, the only time I've ever heard of anyone betting on NHL action was a buddy of mine who was absolutely wasted and down for the day and it was so late and out-of-season that the only thing left to play was west coast hockey. The dude woke up the next morning and didn't even remember making the call, nevermind which games he wagered on. I think he won big though.
Anyway, more to come on this for sure. Off Wing Opinion is covering the story like a champ and, in an unrelated post, shares this video of Mats Sundin getting absolutely laid out. It's worth a minute or two.
Update: Folks who know something about hockey, unlike me, are calling the check on Sundin the hit of the year.
