Hearing the Magic Numbers
Selection Sunday Is Four Weeks Away
When given the choice between watching the Winter Olympics or just about any college basketball game, I'm gonna go with hoops everytime. So even though Grandma Luge is huge, snowboarders are amped and Americans are crashing, let's talk about the Tournament for just minute.
Looking through the lens of ESPN's Bracketology and the Bracketology 101...
· Everyone's four No. 1 seeds of the moment: UConn, Duke, Memphis and Texas.
Duke's a sure-shot No. 1
· The Big East puts eight of its 16 teams in the Tourney and the Big Ten seven.
· ESPN gives the ACC six bids. 101 gives them five (no Miami).
· 101 gives the SEC six. ESPN gives them five (no Arkansas).
· ESPN has Ohio State as a 5, 101 has them as a 2.
· ESPN has Stanford in. 101 has them out.
· They both put Northern Iowa as a 7, but SI's Seth Davis upgrades them to a 4.
Of course, there's still a month of basketball to play, including tonight's UConn-Nova blockbuster which I'll certainly be watching over snowboarding. Speaking of, here's an interesting piece on Jim Calhoun's ongoing feud with Hartford Courant columnist Jeff Jacobs (thanks to Yoco Hoops for the link). Adding fuel to the fire is AOL's John Feinstein, who writes, "While Calhoun's decision to play [Marcus] Williams is understandable, it is also disappointing." So if UConn goes on to win the Big Dance it'll be tainted love for the nation's best team. But anything can happen in March.
Calhoun and evil-doing PG Williams
