I Love Me Some World Baseball Classic
Whereas before today I thought I'd like the WBC, I now know I love the WBC. Here's a sample of the IMs between my brother and I ealier this afternoon as the Dominican team faced off against Venezuela in Orlando:
CMottram04 [1:11 P.M.]: santana just faced soriano to lead off... now he faces tejada second
DCSportsGuy [1:14 P.M.]: with pujols on deck
DCSportsGuy [1:14 P.M.]: this is awesome
DCSportsGuy [1:14 P.M.]: santana's throwing 94.
CMottram04 [1:14 P.M.]: santana made tejada look silly
CMottram04 [1:28 P.M.]: you see that?
DCSportsGuy [1:28 P.M.]: yeah. big papi!
CMottram04 [1:28 P.M.]: dead center
DCSportsGuy [1:28 P.M.]: "you might think i'm crazy, but that might be the biggest home run he's ever hit." -- harold reynolds
Three things to mention before going any further...
1. My scouting report for Johan has him throwing 89-94 in top form, so, unless ESPN's radar gun is skewing high (which is likely), the sensational southpaw is already humping it up there at 100% in early March.
2. I love it when TV announcers say crazy stuff like that. How can HR say that a 2nd-inning homer in the first round of the WBC is bigger than some of the walk-off jobs Ortiz has hit in Boston?
3. The crowd down there in Orlando is goin' nuts. I also think I saw Mick Foley in the front row behind the DR's dugout. Not sure though.
I'm rooting for anyone but the USA
Now, let's take a step back. Japan and Korea have already advanced out of Pool A, but Bodog gives neither of them better than a 9/1 chance of winning it all. In fact, here's how Bodog handicaps the WBC...
-- Japan 9/1
-- Cuba 5/1
-- Venezuela 3/1
-- Dominican Republic 1/1
-- USA 7/5
Team USA starts the assault this afternoon vs. an under-manned Mexican team (50/1). More to come. Meanwhile...
· Hear ESPN's Buster Olney rapping about the WBC on SBL.
· Check out Baseball Musings for fantastic ongoing WBC coverage.
