John Chaney Retires Without Killing John Calipari
For the first time in 24 years, Temple needs a new head coach. Chaney was somehow able to coach the Owls since Reagan's first administration and make it to the college hoops hall of fame despite never making it to the Final Four and giving his school's administration more heart attacks than Bill Swerski's Superfans. That probably says something right there about what kind of person he is beyond the wins and losses and random goon attacks.
He won't be on the bench for Temple's opening round NIT game because of an undisclosed health issue that his wife is going through, but here's to hoping the Owls make it to a second game and, more importantly, Mrs. Chaney overcomes. Regardless, take care ya ol' grizzly bear. The college game will be less interesting without you.

What a disappointing way to see a scrapper like Cheney retire. He sort of limped off into the sunset (or into the sunrise if you're an Owls fan). He had it coming. What did he expect after losing his last marble this year. I am surprised he made it past the Calipari sparring match. His lurch at Coach Calipari made Larry Holmes' leap across the hood of that car look graceful. Ahhnn, we'll miss ya Coach Cheney. You had a good run, better than most coaches with better records than you. Best of luck, and don't lose that spontaneity.

I read an article about how he used to show up early at a high school he coached at so that he could hand out bagels that he bought out of his own pocket to hungry kids. I ended up doing the same thing when I started teaching, and it was a policy that I stole directly from him. I'd have tried to kill Calipari, too.
