What If College Hoops Wasn't Watered-Down?
SI on Campus has put together their second annual What If? Tournament, comprised of the best 64 teams in college hoops... if players weren't allowed to leave early for the NBA. Syracuse (with 'Melo) beat UCLA (w/ Tony Parker and Tyson Chandler, who I guess would have gone there) in the Championship. This year the voting is in-progress, but here are the four no. 1s:
Atlanta region -- Duke with the current lineup plus Luol Deng (junior) and Shaun Livingston (sophomore)
Minneapolis -- Memphis with Amare Stoudemire (senior)
Oakland -- UConn with Charlie Villanueva (junior) and Andrew Bynum (freshman)
D.C. -- UNC with Dwight Howard, J.R. Smith, Marvin Williams (sophomores), Sean May, Ray Felton and Rashad McCants (seniors)
UConn's front court would basically be the biggest ever (Villanueva, Bynum, Boone and Armstrong) and Duke would finally have third and fourth scorers to compliment Redick and Shelden, but I'd love to see a UNC-Memphis final out of these four. Howard vs. Stoudemire alone would be amazing. UNC's depth is so absurd that Tyler Hansbrough and Smith or Williams would come off the bench. Gotta go with the Heels as the What If? champion.
Elsewhere in the bracket... Ohio St. is a 2 seed with some guy calling himself King James... 'Nova is a 3 despite not having any What If? players... 'Cuse is a 2 with 'Melo as a senior and Wiz kid Andray Blatche as a frosh... Georgia Tech is still just a 7 despite the addition of Chris Bosh... none of the MVC teams got any better.
