Hearing Broken Social Scene

Two Sides of an NCAA Upset

In what I regard as the biggest stunner of the Tournament so far, George Mason beat UNC while I was stuck in a movie theatre on Mrs. Irrelevant's birthday seeing 'Failure to Launch' (15-word review: completely mediocre except for the part where you see Terry Bradshaw naked, which is horrifying). Anyway, two of my favorite bloggers -- Sportz Assassin and Saved by the Blog -- were on different sides of the coin: Sportz is a diehard UNC fan and Saved is a GMU undergrad. Here are their respective takes...

· Saved puts Mason in the Elite 8. See, he goes to Mason and will be in the house on Friday night when they play a virtual home game against a Wichita State team they've already beaten on the road this season. He also paints Fairfax, VA as a pretty sorry place to live. It could be a lot worse. Imagine living in a town where an Applebee's is the only place to eat.

· Sportz looks to UNC's '06-07 squad. They have the top recruiting class in the country, look to be the preseason #1 and "could be a championship caliber team. The problem is that most of the guys will either be freshmen or sophomores." If any of their top recruits can play at the 1 or 2, the Tar Heels will be filthy.

Related: Luke Winn's SI blog reports that Mason coach Jim Larranaga played the Purple Ribbon All-Stars 'Kryptonite' in the locker room before the UNC game. Inspired.
