USC's Aspiring George Plimpton
Via Wizard of Odds comes the tale of Ben Malcomson. Earlier this month he joined 28 hopefuls in a tryout to walk-on the USC football team. He's a 6', 170-pound reporter for the Daily Trojan who, after running a 4.72 40 and showing good hands, is one of nine guys invited to join Pete Carroll's squad in spring practice.
It really is a fun story -- the kid has played one year of football in his life (in the fifth grade!) but now may be a member of the '06 Trojans who gets to dress for home games. Considering USC wins by about 30 points per game, it's not that far-fetched to think that Dwayne Jarrett, Steve Smith and the other six wideouts above this guy on the depth chart would step aside at the end of a blowout to give him his Rudy-esque moment complete with the slow-clap and everything.
Read Malcolmson's account of making the team and what the tryout was like over at the Daily Trojan and stay tuned... it should get interesting for the young fella.
