Hearing NCAA 3-point competition

RoboCop on Cusp of 50th Goal

Caps wunderkind Alex Ovechkin needs two goals and six points to pass 50 and 100 on the season, which puts him in elite company -- only one other rookie (Teemu Selanne in '92-93) has done that before. Follow the link to the Washington Post story containing two interesting tidbits...

"Although Ovechkin has yet to complete his first NHL season, his impact on the game is impossible to ignore, particularly in hockey hotbeds like Montreal, where hordes of fans wore his black No. 8 Washington Capitals jersey inside Bell Center...

Ovechkin fed the buzz by wearing a mirrored visor (think "RoboCop") for the first time as an NHL player. He's worn the flashy shield in international competition."

Canadians fans were wearing Caps jerseys? I don't know about that. I can't see Boston fans wearing Chris Paul jerseys to a Hornets-Celtics game. But maybe Paul's not Ovechkin, and maybe hoops fans aren't hockey fans. The RoboCop visor looks pretty cool though.

Anyway, Off Wing goes further into Ovechkin's rookie season, comparing it to Pittsburgh sensation Sidney Crosby's and "looking backward at the Calder race." And the Caps may be having a tough season, but owner Ted Leonsis says they've met at least one goal.

Christ, I hope the Bruins score a hot rookie next year. When I was a kid, Boston was SUCH a hockey town. Now... I taught many years without ever hearing a kid mention it.

Ted should sign that Russkie long-term. He's an amazing talent.
