How Good Is Madden's Fave?
I know you guys were anxiously awaiting this announcement for months, but Brett Favre is coming back for "one more time, sweetness!" Naturally, this has set off a tidal wave of media coverage, most of it coming from ESPN and a lot of it hailing #4 as one of the top-five QBs in NFL history.
Now, Favre's return is unquestionably good for Green Bay but probably bad for his legacy (they're a losing team and he's 21 INT shy of the all-time record). As for the top-five thing, here's my highly subjective and relative list, and I'd love to see yours in the comments or hear them on SBL (call 1-866-382-7469 to leave a message for on-air playback) ...
Top-Five All-Time Quarterbacks
5. Babe Laufenberg
4. Brett Favre, Atlanta Falcon
3. Johnny Utah
2. Billie Joe Tolliver
1. Heath Shuler
Rarity!
Just kidding. Now for the real list f'real ...
5. Dan Marino
4. Brett Favre, Green Bay Packer
3. Johnny Unitas
2. John Elway
1. Joe Montana
Hollaaa!
Update: In a long email from SBL listener Eric from Minneapolis (Ed. note: Start using the comments and voicemail hotline, dude!), I was politely told that my football IQ should be checked at the door ...
"Favre will come back playing smarter under McCarthy this year, playing with a "this is it" fire and the Packers will go 9-7 and possibly sneak into the playoffs."
If he does that and throws the 25 scores needed to pass Marino for the top spot on the all-time list, coming back will be the best thing that's happened to him since being traded from Green Bay. Thanks for the note, Eric.

Sorry but Staubach was better than Farve and Marino and I hated the Cowboys.

I am not sure who came up with this list but conspicuous by his absence is Otto Graham. Perhaps you are not old enough to remember him but none of the players listed were better quarterbacks and/or team leaders!

I'm pretty sure it was someone on your show who said Favre only needs to win 3 more Super Bowls to match his reputation. This is a man who can't shame Mark Rypien or Trent Dilfer when it's time to lay ring hands on the table.
