Dale Junior's Black Stallion

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be runnin' and rubbin' in a replica of his daddy's black Chevy this weekend at Talladega. Dale Sr. had quite a career at that track and his 55th birthday would've been Saturday. And for those us who aren't into NASCAR, we can still tell the weight that his legacy carries by venturing south and counting the No. 3 bumper stickers and black Monte Carlos five years after the Intimidator's untimely death.

If you don't know what I'm talking about with regard to the 3 stickers, then you probably wouldn't get any Calvin-pissing-on-24 references either, but know this: the Diecast Dude is ready to rock for the occasion ...

"So it really will run this weekend, the #8 car decked out not in Budweiser red but rather in silver and black.  The fans are in a frenzy; emotions already running high, diecast collectors and non-collectors alike eagerly/nervously waiting for official word on how and when and where -- or for that matter if -- they can buy a replica...

This is fandom at its deepest level, this connection between those doing the cheering and those being cheered for; the love and joy such a relationship brings.  There can be no denying the glory of this coming moment, watching the son celebrate the father."

I can see a 3 sticker on a car visible out my window as I type this, and I'm on Cape Cod, 2006.
