Greatest Sports TV Moments

ESPN's Page 2 picks the 20 greatest moments in sports TV history. Sadly, Tom Lasorda falling on his keister in the '01 All-Star Game and that one time J.J. Redick dunked did not make the list. Proudly, I watched every non-Olympian event from the past 20 years on the list as it happened live. Here's how I'd rank those that I saw...

8. "Brandi Chastain's World Cup-winning goal" --Entertaining game and the sports bra celebration was real genius. "What's up with the shirt?"

7. "Michael Jordan beats Jazz for sixth NBA title" -- This should have been the last shot of the finest career in American sport. As is, it was still pretty phenomenal.

6. "Vince Young's scramble wins Rose Bowl" -- Even if his NFL career never produces a performance like the one he had vs. USC, I'll always be a Vince fan.

5. "Kirk Gibson's home run" -- Utter disbelief. This is what I think of whenever hearing the words "Vin Scully."

4. "Mark McGwire passes Roger Maris" -- Watched this one in the frat house with the whiskey flowing like water. We were all Big Mac fans that day. Bonus points for the awkward celebratory embrace with Sosa.

3. "Scott Norwood's Super Bowl miss" -- From start to finish, the best Super Bowl game I've seen.

2. "Cal Ripken breaks Lou Gehrig's record" -- Cal homered the day before, the day of and the day after, and when he circled the Yard after the 2,131 unfurled on the Warehouse, I think this guy I know might have cried a little.

1. "The ball rolls through Buckner's legs" -- I was nine year old and very much a Mets fan and staying up to watch the game while on vacation in Clearwater, FL. I remember jumping and running and screaming and waking up all the old people.

The common thread among the top four on that list is that I completely remember where I was and who I was with when watching those games. Here's how ESPN's Sportsnation ranks them, including their top five...

5. Ripken passes Gehrig
4. Flutie's Hail Mary
3. Jordan beats Jazz
2. Kirk Gibson
1. Miracle on Ice

Upated: Critical Fanatic posts his memorable sports TV moments and mentions others that I'd put on my list as well -- Laettner's shot, MJ's shrug after hitting six threes in a half, the World Series earthquake, Jimmy Connors at the '91 Open, Tiger winning his first Masters and Jimmy V's speech. Another I'd add is Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson. That, for me, will be the upset that all others are measured against. I still remember sitting there in utter disbelief watching Iron Mike's mouthpiece fly across the ring.

This is my list so I can do what I want.....

    1.  November 2004.....The 27th out of the fourth game of the World Series.  The Curse is dead!!!!

    2.  October 1992........Where were you when Sid Slid to beat the Pirates?

    3.  November 1982...."Bo Over the Top"  Auburn beats Alabama for the first time in ten years.  Coach Dye defied a dynasty and sent Coach Bryant into retirement.

    4.  Kerri Scruggs...one of the guttsiest performances in sports history.

    5.  Falcons vs Vikings NFC Championship game that sent Atlanta to the Super Bowl.  The best NFL football game I've seen since the great San Diego/Dolphins playoff in 1982.

Honorable Mention:  Buck Belue and Lindsay Scott beat Florida in 1980.
    Buckner
The 1991 World Series (can't single out one moment any more than the next)
    Lorenzo Charles
    1985 Villanova
Auburn beating #1 Florida in 1994 at the Swamp
2005 Auburn/Georgia football game.  It was better than SoCal/Notre Dame
    Jack in 86
Davis Love in the TPC three years ago in a monsoon

I ranked mine on sportsnation yesterday (although i still refuse to consider myself a part of the so called sports nation given the fact that DC is not on their map). i have secretariat as number one, buckner 2, norwood 3, cal 4, and miracle 5.

i'm just glad i was able to attend one of these events live (2131)

Jordan threw aside his defender on the play... had the roles been reversed, Bryon Russell would probably have been given a flagrant foul.

While you were tearing up Clearwater, i was going to bed crying, with my B hat. I'm sure there are still many Russians pissed off about 1980.

I walked into a room as Gibson was limping up to the plate. He hit his homer, and I went back to bed. I may have watched 30 seconds of that game, yet I still saw the best part.

We were listening to BC/Miami on the car radio, and my dad was so happy, he accidentally cut across 3 lanes of I-93 traffic. We then went to a Celtics game, and they won, too.... Life was good, pre-Buckner.
