Hearing Wolf Parade
1,000 Is the New 714
So what if Juan Pierre robbed Barry Bonds of career home run No. 714? Barry's not looking at that, he's looking past that. And no, he's not looking at 755, either. Barry's looking at 1,000. Here, allow his agent, Jeff Borris, to explain...
"If he were a DH, I think 1,000 home runs would be within his grasp. Barry approaches rehab as diligently as anybody. If his knee holds up, I wouldn't put 1,000 home runs past him."
Even in this day in age when player agents says things like, "Johnny Damon is a better leadoff hitter than Rickey Henderson," that's a rather absurd statement. First, Bonds already said during spring training that this will be his last season. Second, Bonds turns 42 in July and has hit exactly 10 home runs since 2004. Third, he has 287 to go until 1,000.
For a moment, though, let's entertain Borris' claim that "1,000 home runs would be within his grasp." Bonds will probably continue playing (or DHing) as long as he can hobble around the bases. And teams will continue paying him to do so as long as he keeps getting on base half the time. Based on his home run rate since '04, he'd need over 3,000 more at-bats to get to 1,000. Considering how often he walks, he'd need about eight more seasons to get those 3,000. Bonds would be 50 years old, but, you know, his agent "wouldn't put [that] past him."
Forget about Ruth and Aaron, could you imagine if he passed Sadaharu Oh's world record of 868 homers? Fans would really hate him then. Anyway, many thanks to the terrific Baseball Musings for the head's up on this story.

With the juice he might hit 2000!!! Now that he has stopped juicing his body is breaking down. He won't reach 720. Its really a shame for the true fans & the kids.
Barry needs to go away.

Bonds' achievements whatever they might end up being, will diminish over time. Furthermore, with the careers of Pujols and Rodriguez yet to reach their zenith, we'll see how long his records will last. Before it's said and done it may well be that Pujols and Rodriguez will have surpassed Bonds' total for home runs.

I heart Juan Pierre!
I BET Barry's agent only dreams that he could hit 1000 HRs...but he's an agent, he has to say these outrageous things.

The ghost of Josh Gibson would cut his Achilles tendon before he got over 800.Barry should spend the rest of his days using his huge head to block breaks in levees.
