American-Born White Ballers
A couple weeks ago on SBL we led the show with a brief discussion of how pitiful the list of the five best American-born caucasians in today's NBA really is. Here's the list: Kirk Hinrich, Mike Miller, Wally Sczerbiak, Brad Miller and Chris Kaman as the starting five with Mark Madsen and his dance moves as the honorary 6th man. That's the kind of lineup -- what, one All-Star appearance between them? -- that makes me wish I'd focused more on hoops than baseball when I was a kid. Maybe I would've ended up ballin' rather than bloggin'.
But just when I'm about to start practicing my free throws, box outs and pick-and-rolls, Jones on the NBA drops this list on the internets: the top 20 white American players of the last 20 years. Wow. And I do mean wow. Jones drops names from my formative years. Dudes like Mark Price. Tom Chambers. Hornacek. Thunder Dan. Skiles. Detlef freaking Schrempf (who looks just like my buddy Cain!).
The list is pretty comprehensive, although one snub that pops out at me is Kelly Tripucka. The guy put up nearly 23 per game in '88-'89 and he sure was white. Really, though, no arguments here. It's just a highly enjoyable post, and Jones says to look out for his next list: the 20 worst ballers from the past 20 years. Can I get an Adam Keefe?

I explored the white guy team a few months ago. You need the European whites to field a full East/West All Star squad. You also need bench ballast guys like Darius Songalia.
In fact, I had to count South Americans as white, even though much of Spain was under African rule for centuries. The argument I made with myself over this policy went like "Mostly white Manu Ginobili... or Dan Dickau makes the team." I almost tried to slip Nene past my audience.
Jimmy the Greek got fired after stating that African field hands were dominating the sport because they were essentially bred from working stock. Now we're being overrun by the descendants of the European serf community. Wait till the Chinese keep one of those footballs they make for us... yikes. -
fair enough, but i take offense to any list without Kiki.
bonus points to Jim McIlvaine for getting that contract out of seattle. -
Great Chambers comment.
This is the qualifier on Schrempf from Jones' post: "Despite being born in Germany, Schrempf did play high school and college basketball in Washington, which makes him eligible for this prestigious(?) list."
