I'm Missing Out on Hockey

The NHL may have averaged less viewers per game on OLN this season than the WNBA on ESPN 2 and even some video blogs on the internets, but I'm starting to think we should tune in the for the upcoming Stanley Cup. Even if, as Tony Kornheiser said, hockey is relegated to "MLS hell," you're just not going to see a scene more stirring than this one in the NBA Playoffs. Maybe in the World Cup, but, still, that's happening in Germay. It's a video of the crowd in Edmonton singing "O Canada" before Game 3. Great stuff in a really sappy, goose bumps-giving kind of way.

 I love America Jr.!

Edmonton, an 8 seed, is up 3-1 and Buffalo, a 4, is up 2-1. The NBA equivalent of those two meeting in the finals would be Cavs-Kings, so, yeah, it's pretty damn improbable. I just wish I knew who the NHL equivalent of LeBron James and Ron Artest is.

While we're here, two more videos that'll make you want to start watching hockey: 1) Alex Ovechkin's greatest goal ever and 2) Brian Bellows getting berated by the Penguins bench (warning: STRONG language).

Update: I failed to mention here the Ducks fans actually booed "O Canada" in Anaheim prior to Game 2. This was Edmonton's response. Thanks to The Mighty MJD for pointing that out. I really don't know my hockey.

If I were running this country, there'd be a big, cold, non-voting 51st state full of nuclear attack survivors.

Never trusted Canada, never will trust Canada.

Send Erin to Quebec, and she'll tell you- just like I'm telling you- that they call you "Upper Mexicans" behind your backs.

OLN is gonna fix those ratings by changing their name to.......Versus.  Yep.  No joke.  They are gonna be called "Versus" next year.

After this deal with OLN/Versus is done, I bet that Gary Bettman will come back to ESPN with his tail between his legs and take a deal far less than what ESPN was willing to give them last summer.  The NHL really screwed up on this one.

Say what you want about ESPN, but they did do a great job pimping the NHL and especially the Stanley Cup playoffs.  And most sports fans have their fingers trained to punch in the channel number for ESPN on their remotes that you have to accidentally run into the NHL every once in a while.  Most people still have no idea where OLN is....and most still don't care.  The NHL deserves better than this.
