Dodgers Take Mattingly
L.A. took Preston Mattingly with the 31st pick in the MLB Draft yesterday. The 6'3" high school shortstop hit .475 this season and was the first player selected from the state of Indiana. Apparently, he's also a stud at basketball and is projected to be a third baseman or outfielder with plate discipline and power. And, yes, that sound you hear is Yankee fans openly weeping. Here's what the son of Donnie Baseball had to say...
"It's awesome. They asked if I'd be comfortable not being a Yankee. I told them, 'Yeah, that would be all right."'
Don's older son Taylor was taken late in the 2003 draft by the Yankees but I believe he's out of baseball already, so the fate of 21st-century Mattinglyism rides on Preston's broad shoulders, which the Dodgers seem fine banking on.
Other notables from yesterday's draft include Notre Dame wideout/pitcher Jeff Samardzija taken in the 5th round by the Cubs and pitcher Kyle Drabek (son of Doug) was taken in the 1st by Philly.
Both links come courtesy of my friend David Pinto at Baseball Musings, who is feeling really old right now.
Update: The Wade Blogs explores the special relationship between No. 3 overall pick Evan Longoria and Debbie Housewife Eva.
Update: The sons of Carney Lansford, Jessie Barfield, Chet Lemon and John Shelby were all drafted (and that's how I'd rank their father's in terms of career quality). No word on the Sons of Sam Horn.
