Big Ben's Bike Crash
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has this news flash up on their main page...
"Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been involved in a traffic accident on Second Avenue near the Armstrong Tunnels and the 10th Street Bridge. More details to follow as they become available."
This story was found after my buddy Putts From the Rough forwarded me this email...
"Just received news from my brother that Ben Roethlisberger’s motorcycle was found totaled about a half hour ago. I think it’s safe to say that the Steelers season is already over 3 months before it begins. Awesome, now I really have nothing to look forward to in the way of sports until college basketball starts."
Roethlisberger's Wikipedia also contains this bit of ominous information...
"Owns a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which he can only ride during the off-season due to contract restrictions. Does not wear a helmet."
Here's to hoping Pittsburgh's franchise QB is alright, not just to play football but to live and breathe. Meanwhile, my thoughts go out to him and his.
Update: Via Deadspin comes this story with a photo from the scene and an ominous bit of information...
"According to an eyewitness, he was not wearing a helmet when he flew over the handlebars and hit his head on the windshield of a car."
Update: My brother IMs...
CMottram04 [12:43 P.M.]: [ESPN's John] Clayton is reporting that injuries to Ben are not life threatening.
Update: Sportz Assassin thinks Ben's an idiot for not wearing a helmet and adds perspective...
"If you remember, the guy drafted five spots before him in the 2004 NFL Draft, Kellen Winslow, had the entire 2005 season gone after he wrecked his bike. He was wearing a helmet.....an unfastened helmet. And that the #2 pick in the 2002 NBA Draft, Jason Williams, got into a very bad motorcycle accident and hasn't played since."

"Roethlisberger has fractured his left sinus cavity bone, sustained a nine-inch gash to the back of his head, suffered injuries to both knees and a broken jaw, and he has lost either "most" or "several" of his teeth."
Update: Steelers fan Dave's Football Blog weighs in...
"Give up the hog, Ben. Go and get a Porsche Cayenne or something. And wear your [bleeping] seat belt."
Update: Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio discusses this on tonight's SBL...
"He's stupid ... He was driving a ridiculously fast crotch rocket."

While I think Roethlisberger is stupid for not wearing a helmet, he's an adult and should be allowed to decide for himself whether to be stupid or not. You can't let the state make that decision for you.

one of the pittsburgh tv stations (wtae) shows pics of the the bike....def a sport bike and not a harley.... the pics from the scene are ridiculous..he crushed that windshield..
