Tennis Needs More Borg
No Mas not only makes great sports tees, but they also now have an excellent sports blog with a cultural bent called Scorecard. Not only can you find the full Illustrated History of Recreational Drug Use in Sports there, but I also uncovered this gem of a film, 'The French', which makes me really wish that my tennis memory extended beyond the salad days of Boris Becker...
"The lost film in question is called “The French,” a documentary about the 1982 French Open directed by William Klein... conclusions from this film:
• Borg was the coolest [bleep]er of all time. He was a cross between Humphrey Bogart, a Swedish porn star and a lazy but talented leopard. He cared little about tennis even though he was the greatest player of his era and in his free time he literally bathed in [bleep].
• Yannick Noah was only slightly less cool than Borg.
• Lendl was like, severely paranoid and weird.
• McEnroe was borderline insane, to the point where it almost seemed like he had Tourette’s syndrome. The moment he stepped on the tennis court he started spouting off, to the ump, to the fans, to any passing birds. Mostly to himself. Nobody liked him (big surprise on that one)."
Sadly, this film is available nowhere. The fellow who posted this, Large over at No Mas, saw a screening a half-decade ago at the Florence Gould in NYC and hasn't seen nor heard of it since. From the excerpts post above, that's a crime.
Luckily, Klein's documentary on Muhammad Ali, 'The Greatest', is available and Large calls it "the best movie ever made about the Champ."
