Preferring Gil Over Wade

Today, of all days, a Washington Times writer opines that he'd take Gilbert Arenas over Dwyane Wade. Now, I've stated my affinity for Agent Zero many, many times in this space, but there's no way I could make any case whatsoever that he's a better player right now or will go on to have a better career than D-Wade. And if someone, oh let's say Tom Knott at the Washington Times, wrote something like that he'd obviously back it up with point after detailed point, right? Right? Well, here's pretty much the only thing that Knott comes with in his misguided column, titled 'Wade Isn't Better Than Arenas'...

"Arenas is one of the most technically sound shooters in the NBA, and his shooting range is extremely rare. Wade has range to about 18 feet, and it all comes apart on him beyond there. His scoring ability is predicated on two elements: impressive athleticism and strength. He employs the latter to create space for his shot attempts. His athleticism is certain to start abandoning him in his late 20s. What then? Might he improve his shooting ability as the seasons pass? Possibly. We'll see. Longevity plays a big part in the assessing of a player's career. Think Reggie Miller. He retired as one of the best ever last year after 18 seasons in the NBA."

Now I know why I don't read the Times. Ever. Because their lead sportswriter (at least according to the navigation on their site) is an aspiring Skip Bayless knock-off.

Many thanks to reader Ryan Cortes for the tip, and I'm proud to say that both of these guys are FoSBL (Friends of Sports Bloggers Live)...

I think complimenting a player's athleticism is a backhanded compliment at best.  It implies that the athlete in question lacks skill or the ability to improve.  Wade has shown he has skill and guts as well as athleticism.  I'm not a big hoops fan, but Wade has been very impressive in most, if not all facets of the game.  I like Arenas as well, but my guess is the sportswriter in question needed to fill space in his paper.

I watched Game 7 in a hospital, with my sister, husband... and, after they went home, like 5 nurses in the room. I actually had a doctor yell at me for cheering too loudly, although he ended up watching the fourth quarter with me.
