Best Football Movie Speeches, or Why 'Remember the Titans' Is Overrated
AOL Movies posts the top 11 football movie speeches of all time, and, even though I wouldn't classify any football film as being truly great, it's an enjoyable list nonetheless with tons of video, excerpts and even a poll. Here are the top three, according to voters:
1. Denzel Washington, 'Remember the Titans' -- 47%
2. Al Pacino, 'Any Given Sunday' -- 19%
3. Charles S. Dutton (aka Rock), 'Rudy' -- 8%
That kills me. 'Titans' was such an below-average movie -- horrible football action, bad storytelling, misrepresentation of facts (in Virginia, football is NOT a way of life) -- and I don't even remember Denzel's speech. All I remember is some fat kid singing Marvin Gaye. Plus, Jon Voight's work in 'Varsity Blues' and James Caan's work in 'The Program' deserve some recognition here. Those were chock-full of awesomeness and their work was straight over-the-top. Well done, gentlemen.
But the best football movie speech of all time? That's got to go to Pacino. "The inches we need are everywhere around us" pep talk at the end of 'Any Given Sunday' was riveting and was one of two high points to a disappointing movie (the other was LT taking a chainsaw to a luxury SUV).
While we're here, I might as well share my top three football movies of all time. After 30 seconds of consideration, they go like this:
1. 'Varsity Blues'
2. 'Rudy'
3. 'The Program'
Hey, I started this post by saying there aren't any great movies about football. Beg to differ? And, yeah, I don't blame anyone if they have a beef with me because all three films are from the '90s. That's just my generation, I guess. 'Varsity Blues' really speaks to us.

How about "Brians Song", "North Dallas Forty" the original "Longest Yard", or "The Junction Boys?"

Friday Night Lights was ok...I am from Odessa and the Panthers had ALOT more going on then the movie showed. I and several of my friends dated Permian f-ballplayers. There was ALOT of STERIOD use and other "medical" procedures going on at half time and before the game. If you look at the pictures in some of the old f-ball programs-you can tell who used and who didn't. The drag in Odessa was full of hot headed steriod users picking fights and harassing girls. That's all I'll say about that. THE MOVIE DID NOT TELL THE TRUTH

1. Friday Night Lights
2. The Program
3. Varsity Blues -
Pacino should have made his speech in a heavily exaggerated Cuban accent.
