Hearing Chris Berman make odd "whoop!" noises on ESPN
Let 'Tana Dance, Pull Up His Pants, etc.
Skins beat the Jags in one of the more thrilling NFL games I've seen in some time. Observations...
1. Joe Gibbs says this about Santana Moss, "If there has ever been a better playmaker in the NFL, I don't know who it is," and, while Coach is prone to hyperbole, it's hard to disagree with him here and now.
2. My preseason prediction for Washington was 10-6 and a playoff spot, and if you'd told me then that they'd play their first four games without Shawn Springs and partially without Clinton Portis I'd have been happy with 2-2. So that's where we're at now, and if they win at New York next Sunday, they're right back on track for that preseason prediction.
3. Mark Brunell still looks old, but his arm seems to have gotten younger.
4. Sean Taylor is the most violent player around. Every hit is a collision.
5. Randy Cross is as bad an announcer as I've heard in awhile, and Dick Enberg needs to retire.
6. The No Fun League has gone too far with the crackdown on celebrations. There were two 15-yard penalties in this game -- one on the Skins after a TD and one on the Jags after a turnover -- for pretty harmless choreographed dances/poses. This was captured perfectly in MJD's Sunday Afternoon Smorgasbord:
"Steve Smith catches a touchdown pass... and follows it with no discernible celebration. This is [really] sad. We're in Week 4, and we haven't had one single memorable touchdown celebration. Eat [man parts], Paul Tagliabue."
Oh, and one final thought on this game, the shots of Al Saunders in the booth make him look eerily similar to my Dad. It's uncanny, really, although I don't think Dad has ever read a 700-page book, let alone authored one.
Update: I completely forgot to mention the Reggie Williams TD reception here. In case you missed it, he caught a 20+-yarder from Byron Leftwich over the middle at the goaline before getting popped by Taylor, causing his helmet to fly off. After landing in the endzone, realizing his head was still on his shoulders and the ball still in his arms, he got up on one knee, extended both arms outward and headbanged (headbung?) as if Metallica's ...And Justice for All was blaring throughout FedEx. It was an awesome display of athleticism and emotion. Totally badass.
Update: Kissing Suzy Kolber is kind enough to post video of the Moss Man's walk-off TD so you can watch it over and over.

At one point, Mike Sellers was going at it with a Jacksonville lineman and Cross described their tussle as "mano de mano". Absolutely unbearable.

Who has time to read books when I have plays to script? Do you think Al Saunders mutters "sum bitch" after each botched play like I do?
