Player Comparison: Harrison vs. Holt

You'd never know it by the amount of attention given to Terrell Owens, Chad Johnson, Steve Smith and Randy Moss*, but there's no doubting that Marvin Harrison and Torry Holt are the finest receivers of this generation. And because Holt hooked up my fantasy teams last week with three touchdowns and Harrison burned my real team today with two, let's take a look at the two statistically to determine which is the best of the best.

Career Numbers (Overall)
Harrison: 966 receptions, 12,846 yards and 113 touchdowns
Holt: 656 receptions, 10,013 yards and 61 touchdowns

Career Numbers (Per Game)
Harrison: 6.1 receptions, 80.8 yards and 0.71 touchdowns
Holt: 5.7 receptions, 86.3 yards and 0.53 touchdowns

Looking at that, I'd give the slight edge to Harrison for two reasons: 1) He has done it longer. 2) He catches 25% more touchdowns per game.  Plus, he'd "prefer to play in an empty stadium," which is awesome, and he gets bonus points for the sweet 'stache.

Rather than focus on the differences, though, it's more interesting to note the similarities between these guys. They've both played with one team and stayed remarkably healthy their entire career. They've each benefited from stellar quarterbacking (Peyton Manning and Kurt Warner/Marc Bulger), great running backs (Edgerrin James and Marshall Faulk/Stephen Jackson) and indoor stadiums. They've also had to share the ball with other notable receivers (Isaac Bruce and Reggie Wayne). And, of course, neither guy is known for whipping out a Sharpie or using a pylon as a putter in the end zone.

And, in case you're wondering, neither Harrison nor Holt's numbers can quite hold up to what Jerry Rice did over his first twelve seasons in San Fran: 5.9 receptions, 87.1 yards and 0.82 touchdowns per game. That said, this whole comparison stems from a Rams FanHouse post from a week ago comparing Rice and Holt through each of their first eight seasons.

* With regard to Owens, Johnson, Smith or Moss, they're dismissed from this conversation due to either the inconsistent or brief nature of their careers to-date.

Harrison is very good but he cant keep up with Holt. Holt is faster, bigger, stronger, and i think he even has better hands than Harrison. Harrison also has a better quarter back. Holt played with a messed up knee this year and still dominated.

I totally agree with you Jamie. Holt is an amazingreciever that deserves all the credit in the world but Harrison is quite "godly." Even though Harrison's quarterback is the best of my time and possibly ever he is still a step above the rest.
