Hearing Maryland win the 'CvC'
Kevin Durant Has Not Yet Begun to Play
Texas inches by St. John's in the Coaches vs. Cancer consolation game, and super frosh KD drops 29 points just one day after posting 21 in a loss to Michigan State. Through four games the 6'9", barely 18 year-old is averaging 23, 10 and 3 and seems to have it all (jumper, leaping ability, mentality, wingspan, speed, handle, vision, etc.). What's scary for the rest of the nation and particularly the Big XII, though, is what Longhorns coach Rick Barnes is saying:
"Kevin hasn't played well yet. He is progressing well. In practice he's our best inside scorer and he has a terrific midcourt game. He is 200 miles from where he was two weeks ago. He's special."
So yeah, this is a kid we're going to hear more about as the season progresses and probably become overly familar with as he jumps to the NBA, makes All-Star teams and gets hideous-looking shoes named after him. With that in mind, here's what draft pundits have on young Durant:
• ESPN.com's Chad Ford lists him as the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2007 Draft and quotes scouts as calling him "Kevin Garnett with a 3-point shot."
• DraftExpress.com has him going 7th in the '07 Draft and an interview with Durant wherein he says his game most resembles that of "Rashard Lewis. Then maybe T-Mac."
• NBADraft.net has him going 2nd in the '07 Draft and primarily compares him to Tracy McGrady with secondary comparisons to KG, Andrei Kirilenko, Grant Hill and (gulp) Darius Miles.
Of course, this freshman class is "one of the best of all time," and I can't imagine any of them, Greg Oden included, being much better than this kid who's lighting it up for Texas via Suitland, MD (a.k.a. Garyland). I suppose we'll see. And speaking of MD, how 'bout them Turtles?
Update: Them Turtles enter the top-25 at No. 25.
