Hockey Brawls: Equal Parts Brutality and Cordialness
This fight between 6'3", 243-pound Georges Laraque of Phoenix and 6'4", 263-pound Raitis Ivanans of LA is unexceptional aside from the fact that Laraque is miked up. Here's what he has to say (calmly, mind you) to Ivanans as the two enforcers await the drop of the puck:
"You want to? Okay. We're up? Okay. Good luck then."
That's terrific. It's as if they don't even have to fight but are too bloodthirsty to resist the urge, or at least Laraque is. Probably because, as the announcer says, "He's the heavyweight champion of the league, no question about it." Let the record show -- courtesy of HockeyFights.com, who keep track of such things -- that Laraque is the winner here and stands at 5-0 on the year vs. Ivanans' rather Don Flamenco-esque record of 3-4-1.

He says "Square up?" not "we're up"

I hate associationnba, but have to agree with him about Georges Laraque. It is nice to see a few of the NHL heavyweights get a little more active. Better than the last fight card I paid to see, where 3 out of the 5 fights ended with a boxer quitting on the stool.

I hate hockey. I hate fighting in hockey. But this is truly SPECTACULAR! I wonder if Carmelo said the same thing to Mardy Collins...

I have gained respect for the coyotes player who was so calm and peas and nuts about the whole situation he was about to encounter. Punches hurt but really, he seemed so sure of himself that its almost ugly the way he acts. In conclusion I think this "the rock" is an ok guy. Its not like he pulled a bertuzzi or a domi or anything. I was competition that was on both theses players minds. Good show guys!!!!!
