Hearing Explosions in the Sky

Talk It Out: Oden-Durant, Monk-Irvin and Manning-Brady

In recent days three of my favorite sports blogs have weighed in on three hot debates, each of which deserves a separate post. And since each has already received that treatment elsewhere, I'll round them up here and weigh in with opinions of my own ...

1. Dan Shanoff: Greg Oden vs. Kevin Durant -- Who should go No. 1 in the NBA Draft?

I've been on the Durant bandwagon since November, but if I'm sitting there with the top pick, I call Oden's name. Guys like Durant, as phenomenal as they may be, sell tickets and jerseys, but guys like Oden win championships. Look at the title teams since MJ left Chicago: LA (Shaq), San Antonio (Duncan), Detroit (Big Ben) and Miami (Shaq again). While it may not be as simple as that, I wouldn't futz with the formula. Get the big man.

2. The Big Lead: Art Monk vs. Michael Irvin -- Who was the better wide receiver?

As the creator of the Elect Art Monk petition, there's no way in hell I'd say the Playmaker was superior. That said, I won't bash Irvin either. He belongs in Canton, and I'm glad he got in. You could go tit-for-tat comparing their careers all day long and never reach a conclusion, but consider this: Irvin's QB was Aikman while Monk's QBs were Theismann, Schroeder, Williams and Rypien. Plus, 81 has a blog dedicated to his HOF campaign as well as a superb 21-minute video. You just can't top that, unless you walk around wearing Wizznutzz' latest creation.

3. Saved by the Blog: Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady -- Who would you rather have under center?

My brother has long maintained that Manning is better than Brady, and I've always disagreed with him ... until now. Peyton finally made it through the playoffs without laying an egg, and there's no way I, or anyone else, really, could honestly say that he isn't the best QB -- and NFL pitchman -- on the planet right now.

Your take on all three matters would be appreciated in the comments, unless you're anti-Monk. Then you should go away please.

Durant is a talented forward, who come around every other draft or so. Oden is a talented center, who come around every generation or so.

Even if Oden doesn't turn the team around, you're still in the lottery..and still have another chance at a franchise forward. You may live and die before the draft offers the next Shaq to you.

At worst, you pass on a superb forward. Viewed as even a worst-case scenario, you hear people bitch about Portland taking Sam Bowie over Jordan. You rarely hear anyone bitch about Houston taking Olajuwon.

If Danny Ainge passes on Greg Oden, I will castrate Ainge with the shards of my shattered dreams.

    1. Oden. You don't get 7 foot with dominating inside post skills a heck of a lot.
    2. Monk. While you can argue that the Cowboys wouldn't have won those championships without Irvin, you can also say the same about Art.
    3. Brady. Manning's good, but Brady keeps getting back to the playoffs with different cast members. We can have this debate again after Peyton's second ring (he'll probably get another.)

    1. Oden. He's playing lefthanded and he's a righty.
    2. Art Monk. Simply for a better mustache
    3. Tom Brady. laser Rocket Arm goes down to Dreamboat based on the fact that they are equal as QB's but manning looks like he couldn't get laid if Rextasy dropped some hoes on his lap.

I know I said I'd take Peyton, but I change my mind: I want the Cadillac SLR please.
