The Top 10 Sports Blogs According to Me
Timeline: 1) Earlier this spring, Joe Morgan was mocked for saying, "You can't compare things with statistics." 2) A few of weeks ago, my boss's boss asked me to provide a list of the top 10 sports blogs for a presentation. 3) Last week, Ballhype unveiled their blog rankings, which are "based on inbound links from other blogs."
With all due respect to Ballhype and with full awareness that I'm going with my gut over, you know, actual data, I think my top-10 list holds up, even if it is just a subjective-yet-educated list based on perceived traffic, quality and notoriety.
Three notes before getting into it: 1) FanHouse isn't part of the discussion, because there's no way I can objectively rank it ... with my gut. 2) Athlete blogs such as Gilbert Arenas and Curt Schilling's need not apply. 3) Five of these sites have writers who actively contribute to FanHouse.
These are not the actual bloggers that are on this list. Rather they're 10 random selections from FanHouse's new mini-mugshots that accompany each byline.
OK, without further adieu, here's the exact list of the top 10 sports blogs that I sent to my boss's boss:
1. Deadspin (big traffic, strong brand) -- http://deadspin.com/
2. SB Nation (far-reaching network) -- http://sbnation.com/
3. Sports by Brooks (lots of skin, gossip) -- http://sportsbybrooks.com/
4. True Hoop (acquired by ESPN) -- http://myespn.go.com/nba/truehoop
5. The Big Lead (read by all of sports media) -- http://thebiglead.com/
6. With Leather (sexy pics, crazy videos) -- http://withleather.com/
7. Every Day Should Be Saturday (college football) -- http://everydayshouldbesaturday.com/
8. Kissing Suzy Kolber (NFL humor) -- http://kissmesuzy.blogspot.com/
9. Baseball Musings (inside baseball) -- http://baseballmusings.com/
10. Free Darko (NBA existentialism) -- http://freedarko.blogspot.com/
I love that this is part of my job, but I also want to make sure that I'm doing my job well. So is my list full of it? Is it more on point than Ballhype's? Let me know via comments and/or email.
Update: Ballhype has updated their rankings to, in my opinion, more accurately reflect reality. Good for them, and us. Also, one blogger pointed to Alexa to discredit my rankings. While I appreciate the effort, I also don't find Alexa to be consistently reliable. Many thanks to everyone for the feedback. Please continue.
Update No. 2: I used to know this, but had forgotten ... Sports Media Challenge issues their own blog rankings, which they call the Sports Blog Index.

So, if you've had a blog you never heard of, where would that rank, 10,000? 100,000?
I mean The Big Lead did link us. Once.

Yes. Cheap self-promotion. Yes, just stopping in to say hi.
But come on, the I can has cheezburger people once visited. You should too. -
I don't want to be on your d*** list Jamie! Just kidding.....this one about sums up the pecking order although EDSBS and TBL should by higher than some that will remain nameless.
Everything's subjective though, and it depends on what your criteria is. -
The Starting Five is still relatively new, but they have been doing the damn thing with their insightful writing and great interviews. Their viewpoint is very refreshing.
They definitely will crack the list in the future.
