DC Radio's 'Sports Junkies' Fall for EDSBS Spoof
I've been exposed to the Sports Junkies radio program for 10 years or so. Initially, their four-regular-guys-talking-sports vibe was enjoyable enough, but the shtick grew old quickly and now the only time I listen to them is if a good guest happens to call in (see: their Clinton Portis interview from last spring).
The problem is that they use annoying, Swingers-era slang like "money" and "donkey" and "silly" until you want to flip your car on the Beltway/Toll Road/66/whatever. They also have too many racist, homophobic and sexist tendencies for my taste. It's too bad, really, because I spend an hour in the car most mornings and the only other sports talk options are the insufferable Mike & Mike and Steve Czaban, who's alright but sounds like he's mailing it in most of the time.
That said, it was with great joy that I stumbled upon top college football blog Every Day Should Be Saturday's revelation that the Junkies picked up a fake story about LSU coach Les Miles ranting about an 11-year-old girl and reported it as fact not fiction.
These are the Junkies. The wedgie giver on the right, Lurch, was the one who touted the EDSBS story.
You've go to hear this to realize the absurdity of it, but know that it takes over four minutes of on-air discussion before they even question the legitimacy of the story, which couldn't be more ridiculous. The full clip is almost 10 minutes long, and it is so rich. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen.
To be fair, I can see how something like this can happen, especially to radio guys with five hours to fill five days a week. But as someone who has scoured the web for the past two-and-a-half years culling fodder for radio and TV programs such as Sports Bloggers Live, Cold Pizza and now Blog Show, I've never come close to being duped like this. Unless, of course, you count the time I thought this was an unaltered photograph.
Update: Minutes after posting this I discovered that SI.com stole a fictitious P. Diddy quote from FanHouse. What's with mainstreamers not understanding satire? More to come on this one.
