~ You may've noticed the name change of this Journal from A Cinderella Story to Mr. Irrelevant. The Cinderella thing was a dual reference to March Madness and a quote from Bill Murray in Caddyshack: "This crowd has gone deadly silent, a Cinderella story outta nowhere. Former greenskeeper and now about to become the masters champion." Ultimately Mr. Irrelevant is a bit mo' memorable and appropriate. Of course, this comes from the moniker given to the final player selected in each year's NFL Draft. Plus, sports commentary is pretty much irrelevant to anything that actually matters anyway. So I went w/ it. Tell me what you think about the name change.
~ Over 150 fans commented on the Bonds-Clemens debate. The overwhelming majority said they'd've drafted Clemens in '83, but I'm sticking w/ Bonds. Pitching may win championships, Clemens may have one more ring than Bonds and Bonds may've used steroids, but the most convincing argument either way comes from jhassert: "A look at career Win Shares would help. Clemens has the third-highest lifetime Win Share total of active players through '03. His total is 378. Barry Bonds, among active players, is number one. His total? 611. Ouch. I'll still go with Barry." Don't ask me what the formula is for Win Shares, but this sounds good to me.
~ This AOL member and Mets fan feels that GirlsRNuts. For sum dum reason his buddy profile made me laugh.
~ Tim Duncan didn't win MVP this year as Kevin Garnett beat him in a race reminiscent of Karl Malone over MJ in '97. The similarity is that the Mailman was in no way a more valuable or better player than MJ back in '97,and the same could be said for KG and Duncan in '04. I guess they just don't like to give the award to the same guy every year. Who should've won?
~ Certain songs are played for closers. You know, like in the scene from Major League when Ricky Vaughn comes in, "Wild Thing" comes on and he strikes out Indian-killer Clue Haywood on 3 straight heaters. Anyway, if I were a closer, my song would be "Shutthe Door" by Fugazi. It's got maximum pumpitude and actually includes the line "Shut the door... it's time to leave." What would your closer song be? And what closer songs do you know of from around the Majors?
~ Congratulations are in order to my buddy Andy who made double-eagle on Friday by draining a 220-yard 3-iron. This is more rare than a hole-in-one. Even Tiger Woods has never done it. Yet my buddy Andy (whose next-best sport is tailgating) has one on his resume. Gotta love golf.
~ The early front-runners for the most underrated players in baseball are B.J. Ryan and Rodrigo Lopez. They're the reason B'more is hanging around w/ the mighty Yankees and Red Sox. Lefties are 0-for-24 against Ryan (0-for-24!). His ERA is 1.89, and he has 28 K in 19 IP. Lopez leads the AL w/ relief IP w/ 25 and his ERA is 0.36 (0.36!).
~ Brad Pitt found inspiration for his Troy character from watching Chris Webber. Odd that one of the NBA's softest big men would be used for getting into the mindset of a warrior, but maybe that explains why Pitt looks like he's playing a Greek goddess in the film.

Timmy Duncan is really soft.

Just to let dcsports guy know, Byno means is chris webber soft. Very few players in the nba have the drive or passion about the game as he does. Watch his reactions during a game or his emotions during a game and the intensity he plays with and tell me he is soft. Soft is a Tim Duncan who has the same stupid look on his face the entire game and just jumps and lays a ball in. That is soft.

My anthem as closer would have to be "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place" by Eric Burden and the Animals. I'm dating myself again.

Well yes kobe needs to learn from his mistakes however controling the human harmones is not an easything to do Know more then it was for king Davied having the husband of bathesheba in the bible put on the front line in battle to be killed so he can have his wife Bathesheba. however, do we learn from Davied to this day WHEN we read our bible? God give us his inspired writing in the bible to read for a reason, so human can make mistake and if God can forgive them why can't we? Our we the judge of any human being? God only knows if Kobe is guilty or not. And none of us can't really say what we would be tempted to do if we were tempted as any athlete is, especially a young one at that whom life has just begun before they could even realize. dwhite559@aol.com
