Vince Young Breaks Through on New Year's Day

I was in NYC for the New Year's holiday and missed all but 15 minutes of the weekend's football action. Fortunately, those 15 minutes happened to be during the end of the Rose Bowl when sophomore QB Vince Young guided Texas to a 38-37 comeback win over Michigan. I don't watch much college football, and I'd never even seen Young play before. But I'm glad I did. He looked faster, taller and more elusive than everyone else on the field. Like a swifter Billy Bob from Varsity Blues, he couldn't be brought to the ground.

For the game, he had 192 rushing yards and 4 TD runs ranging in yardage from 10 to 60. Down 31-21 in the 4th, Young broke off two runs -- one improbable and one impressive -- for paydirt that forced OT, an eventual Longhorns victory and his ascension to QB stardom on the national level. He didn't throw much, but the man looked like a 6'5" Michael Vick -- which is scary good.

 The 2005 Heisman?

Now, for more informed opinions on Young's performance:

· Kevin Blackstone in the Dallas Morning News (registration required): "Young is, as he proved in leading his guys to the Rose Bowl win, the most dangerous offensive player in college football. Only [Mack] Brown's offensive coordinator Greg Davis can contain him."

"In fact, should Young, who will be a junior next season, learn to throw more accurately, and his receivers become more sure-handed, he won't only be more than a candidate to take [Jason] White's seat at the Downtown Athletic Club next December. He'll be the frontrunner to leave the place with the famous bronze trophy. His arm, or his coaches' ability to develop it, is the only thing holding him back. It's the only thing stopping him from living up to his original billing as the next Michael Vick."

· Wayne Drehs on ESPN.com: "On third and goal from the 10, on a play he should have been sacked, Young scored, pulling the Longhorns within three, 31-28, with less than 10 minutes to play. It was a scratch your head, hit the TiVo and ask 'How did he do that?' moment. Unless you were a Longhorn. 'Honestly man, he does that kinda stuff all the time,' running back Cedric Benson said. 'He just sorta toys with people.' It looked impossible. Sorta like making the BCS look smart. Like making people forget about computers, formulas or Pac-10 teams from Berkeley and instead think that Michigan vs. Texas in the Rose Bowl is the best idea since Keith Jackson picked up a microphone."

"And all it took was two legs. Two tall, chiseled, tattoo-covered legs to make all the athletic directors, school presidents, poll voters and BCS computer nerds look like geniuses. Two stronger-than-oak ankles to get the 'can't win the big game' monkey off the back of Texas coach Mack Brown. And two grapefruit-sized calves to leave Rose Bowl CEO Mitch Dorger with a giant smile on his face."

    Uh, yeah, mrlee88888, ur an idiot. Vince acted exactly the way that Reggie did, if not better. And as for Leinhart, well, we all heard his comments. USC is the better team? Jeez, I could swear that the trophy's in Austin, Texas, and not in Los Angeles, California. So don't get off on "class." And as for you saying that Texas relied on Vince and that's why USC is better, "wow." Let's see, who has USC been relying on for the entire season? Oh, Matt Leinhart and Reggie Bush. So just shut up take the loss graciously, and practice what you preach.

    mrlee88888 about your comment, vince wasn't gracious. did you watch the heisman presentation? Bush didn't mention vince one time so vince repaid the non-gracious favor, i only wish he would have struck the heisman pose after he scored the go ahead touchdown. quit picking at stuff and let texas have their moment

    matt l. is a baby he wanted 3 in a row but he ran into the greatest college quarterback (maybe ever). I wish he would have stayed another year but hopefully he will have a great nfl career. oh and one more thing if i were mack brown i would dedicate this rose bowl win to adrian peterson who was quoted in the paper saying he chose OU over Texas because texas couldn't win the big game! yeah peterson OU has done great in the big game since you've been there.

    NO CLASS? NO CLASS?

    let's quote matt leinart fora moment

    "Uhh its tough you know but we'll move on. its a great WIN, uh great hard fought loss i guess but you know whatever we still think i think we're still a better football team but they just made the plays in the end."

    who has no class?
    I guess they didnt cover being gracious in ballroom dancing

    not once did vince undercut his opponent.  He just won the national championship, he was excited, he was brilliant.

    let the man celebrate
