Requiem for Pigskin Bloggers

A little over two years ago, this site, Pigskin Bloggers, began with AOL asking its Sports Community members to blog about their favorite NFL team twice a week throughout the '04 season. Of course, back then, most of the people we talked to about it had no idea what blogging was. And, of course, that, in part, is what made them so good at it and set off this chain reaction over the next 25 months...

-- Pigskin Bloggers became a top-five AOL Journal in terms of traffic.

-- Pigskin Bloggers begat an Internet radio program, Pigskin Bloggers Live.

-- Pigskin Bloggers Live morphed into Sports Bloggers Live, which continues airing twice a week to this day.

-- AOL Sports looked at the success of SBL and created FanHouse, a professional sports blogging network.

And it's that which brings us here. FanHouse launched four weeks ago and it, in concert with SBL, demands too much of my time to keep Pigskin Bloggers going for the '06 season. Sure, the related sites may and should live on, but this page will no longer reflect their opinions and commentary.

Before moving on for good, though, please indulge me as I thank the Pigskin Blogger Hall of Famers, if you will. These folks made the site what it was, and I hope they keep putting their passion into words...

I'd be famous already if God hadn't cursed me with Julia Childs' voice.... I'd be visual hilarity working with a big geek like Bill Walton.

Basically, I stay out of beefs that can't be resolved with Psych 421 or karate. I can understand where J would have difficulty tracking 30 blogs if he suddenly had a fanhouse dropped in his lap... I could barely cover 6-8 at Two Minute Warning, and I don't work, period.

George, I agree with your comments...the fact that only one of us was invited to contribute to the FanHouse shows a lack of loyalty.  Also, MVN, while I'm getting a much bigger audience than at Minnesota Sports, doesn't have that personal feel to it...maybe I'm not making sense here, but there was something about Jamie picking out a quote from an entry to post here that was really cool.

But like I said, the reason MVN recruited me for the Vikings was Pigskin Bloggers.  Wouldn't be doing that without this site.  I certainly wish Jamie the best of luck with FanHouse, but something reeks in the whole "paid blogger" concept.  I'd rather read amateurs...but that's just me.
