I am writing to hope to find a way to end passivity in writing

This was from a cover letter I found in our office mail:

I am writing to apply for a position

 Get to the point!

Write "I am applying for...".   You don't have to say "I am writing...". We already KNOW you are writing!

Or how about this: “Attached please find…” I’ve always disliked that. Get to the point! “Attached is…” is so much better!

This is a personal beef I've had for years.  I hate it when someone begins a phone conversation with "The reason I'm calling is . . . ."  Why can't they just say, "I'm calling to/for . . . ."
