Feeling Quiet
A Special Anniversary for Me
Today is the 10th anniversary of the death of my mother. What made the event even harder was that she was buried the day after my father's 80th birthday. No one ever wished him birthday wishes for that special milestone. Due to the passing of a distant cousin, I did have the chance to get a special wreath to put on her grave today.
May I tell you some things about my mother? She was born in a small town, Cuero, Tx, and raised in Yoakum, Tx. The family moved to Austin, Tx when she was 14. Her mother died in 1938 when mom was 16. My grandfather told her to get married about that time. She graduated from high school in Dec 1938. I think she got divorced about 1940 or 1941. She married my dad in Dec 1941. She was a good wife (married 55+ yrs). She was a good military wife and that was not an easy road. She was a good mother especially considering there were no support groups or places for information about parenting disabled children back then.
Mom was a "people person" and was liked by most everyone. In her later years she loved to travel, go to many senior citizens activities and was very active in her Eastern Star chapter. She loved to cook, can, sew and lots of those things young people don't do anymore. She was a do-er and was always busy. She was also a helper and was always helping someone, be it a family member or a neighbor. To this day, people in her community still tell me how much they miss her. -- As do I.
