JULY 3RD

1906: Doc White fired a one-hit shutout in the White Sox 3-0 win over the St. Louis Browns in the second game of a doubleheader at South Side Park. It was the fourth of White’s five career one-hitters with the White Sox.

1929: Carl Reynolds’ steal of home highlighted a three-run 10th in the White Sox 6-3 win at Cleveland. Hal McKain got the win in relief of Ed Walsh, the son of the team legend, as the Sox stopped a six-game skid.

1948: A year before joining the White Sox, Dick Lane clubbed five home runs for Muskegon in a Central League game against Fort Wayne. Lane, an outfielder from Highland Park, Mich., hit .119 with four RBIs in 12 games for the 1949 White Sox -- his only taste of big league action.

1952: Eddie Robinson clubbed a pair of 3-run homers in the Sox 12-3 win over the Browns before 6,916 at Comiskey Park. Robinson’s blasts led to seven RBIs and enabled the Sox to take over second place. The day also included the completion of a game from April 27 in which the Sox prevailed 6-3 with Chuck Stobbs earning the save for Marv Grissom.

1956: Jim Wilson fired a six-hitter for his 11th victory in the White Sox 6-0 win at Detroit. Wilson walked four and struck out one and got help from Walt Dropo, who homered, and Nellie Fox and Sam Esposito, who each had three hits.

1958: Jim Landis drove in a career-high four runs in a 7-2 win over Kansas City before 2,601 at Comiskey Park. Jim Wilson pitched into the eighth inning and gave up two runs on eight hits for his seventh win.

1959: Al Smith’s homer in the 10th inning was the difference in the White Sox 6-5 win at Detroit.

1960: Roy Sievers hit the game-tying homer in the seventh and scored the game-winning run in the 11th inning in the White Sox 2-1 win at Baltimore. Sievers scored on Sherm Lollar’s two-out single.

1966: A pair of RBIs from Lee Elia helped the White Sox earn a split of a doubleheader with the Boston Red Sox before 15,320 at Comiskey Park. Elia led the Sox to a 3-2 win Game 2 after the Southsiders dropped the opener 5-2.

1969: Bill Melton delivered a walkoff home run in the 11th inning in the White Sox 5-4 win over Minnesota before 2,496 at Comiskey Park. The blast halted a five-game skid. Chicago native Dan Osinski got the victory with two scoreless innings of relief.

1971: Rich McKinney’s eighth-inning triple scored Mike Hershberger with the game’s only run in the White Sox 1-0 win at Kansas City. Tommy John used that run to craft his sixth win, a six-hitter.

1973: Tony Muser set a club record with five walks in the White Sox 15-1 win overthe Rangers in the first game of a doubleheader in Texas. Frank Thomas tied the record June 5, 1996 at Boston. Bill Melton drove in four runs as part of a 15-hit attack that included just two extra-base hits (both doubles). Wilbur Wood cruised with the led, allowing an unearned run and four hits for his 15th win.

1975: Jim Kaat, bound for the All-Star Game, improved to 13-4 with relief help from Rich Gossage, also bound for the All-Star Game, in the White Sox3-2 win over the A’s before 13,359 at Comiskey Park. Gossage came on with two on and two out in the ninth but whiffed Bert Campaneris and Billy North to end it for his 12th save.

1976: The White Sox lost to Texas 3-0 in the first morning game in Comiskey Park history. The first pitch was thrown at 10:30 a.m. Nellie Briles got the win over Terry Forster before 10,099 at Comiskey Park.  Bill Veeck marketed the game as “The Sox Breakfast Special” and featured free Egg McMuffins from McDonalds to the first few thousand fans who entered the park.

1977: The surging White Sox swept a doubleheader from second-place Minnesota before 33,898 at Comiskey Park in opening a three-game lead atop the American League West. Wilbur Wood tossed a three-hitter in the White Sox 6-0 win in the first game. In the nightcap, the Sox scored four in the first thanks to a two-run homer from Jim Spencer in a 10-8 victory. The sweep extended the White Sox winning streak to four.

1978: Home runs from Chet Lemon and Jorge Orta in the ninth lifted the White Sox to a dramatic 7-6 win over Texas before 42,231 at Comiskey Park. Lemon led off the inning with a blast. After a groundout and a Lamar Johnson walk, Orta ended the game with his 12th homer of the year.
