7 week old Newfoundland pups, on the day we shot pictures for my DVD cover
(Check out the cover pup at www.NewPuppyNowWhat.com)
Today was a great day to be a dog trainer. Brisk fall air, lots of sunshine, leaves looking like port wine cheese...you West Coast folks are missing out.
I worked with a favorite client on this Great Fall Day. She has a 4 month old lab - we'll call him Picasso (all names will be changed so I can report the real deal without hurting feelings). Gretel (clearly not her real name) has been a joy to work with because she actually does her homework. It seems like a simple concept, but so many of you - the dog owning public - don't put in the time with your dog. There's an AA slogan that says "It works if you work it." Well, that's true of dog training too. Now I'm going to pour myself a beer.
So Gretel and I took Picasso out in her big, big, big back yard and worked on recalls (coming when called). Speaking of the big back yard, I suppose I should mention that I do private lessons, so I get to see lots of cool houses. And some really scary houses. Poop on the floor, windows nailed shut, creepy-guy-lurking-in-the-shadows houses. Details to follow.
Picasso is wonderfully responsive (because he has such a dedicated Mom), so every time we called for him he'd race to us, ignoring everything in his path. Even a squirrel. That's what positive, consistent training can do for a dog. It was beautiful to see this sweet pup tearing through the woods each time we called him, and I'll admit that I got a little choked up. I was touched to see the strong bond between dog and human, and thankful that I have a job that enables me to experience it on a daily basis.
Days like today make me feel so lucky. But then I have days where I deal with people like "The Serial Killer Client", "The Crazy Lady", "The Bickering Bickersons" and "My Most Repellant Client of All Time". Want to meet them? Think you might be one of them??
Stay tuned.
