"Check me out!"
I met with a former client bright and early this morning to do a quick refresher session. Although I haven't been to their house in 7 months, I expected Jordan the Rottie to remember me and greet me with a typical happy-jumpy "Oh my Dog the Hot Dog Lady is here" hello. I braced myself - 80 pounds of Rottie is a lot to take at 8:00 in the morning!
I heard my client say "Jordan, bed!" before he opened the door. I was pleased that he was attempting to send Jordan to her bed, but dubious that she could perform this behavior with the Hot Dog Lady just inches away. "At least he's trying", I thought. My client let me in, we hugged hello, I waited for Rottweiler paws on my shoulders ...but no Jordan.
"No way!" I said "She's still on her bed?!"
Yes indeed! There she was, sitting on her bed two rooms away, waiting for her Dad to give her the word to come greet me. Amazing, wonderful, impressive stuff!! What a great way to start the day!
Teaching "go to your bed" is one of my favorite training exercises. It's a cute party trick, and very useful in the real world. It's simple to teach the basic behavior, but Jordan's Dad really took it to the next level. There's a big difference between working on "bed" during controlled training sessions, versus doing it when interesting strangers are at the front door. It takes dedication to get this level of responsiveness from a dog, but as I've said before, it works if you work it!
Go Jordan!

"How ya like me now?"
By the way, Rotties rock.

Rotts are such good dogs. Its owners that make them good or bad. they are very responsive to commands, and I really think they want to please their owner. Jordan looks very smart. Good job!! on the bed command!!!!
