The Perils of Potty Pads

Taylor just finished up her training with me this morning:

Check out that under bite!

Taylor and her Mom did a great job with training, but there's just one major
"issue" that remains; Taylor's potty pad addiction.

Taylor has been using them since she first came home, and at five months old,
she's quite attached to them now.  And that's the problem...dogs develop a
"substrate preference" for where they eliminate, and pups potty trained on pads
naturally develop a preference for them instead of grass.  The pads work ok at first,
until you try to transition off of them....then it's almost as if you're starting potty training
all over again.  Taylor has had little exposure to eliminating on grass, so even
if she goes for a 20 minute walk, she still "holds it" until she can get back to her
potty pad.

Taylor ain't the only one....Bernie of "go to your crate" fame is also a slave
to the pad.  Every time I walk into a household and see potty pads on the
floor I know that I've got my work cut out for me.  Do yourself a favor; skip
the potty pads and teach your pup that the best place - the only place -
to potty is outside.

Trust me on this one.

"Maybe this fabulous down-stay will make you forget about the potty pad stuff."
