"Is she gone yet?"
My new puppy clients are usually overjoyed to see
me ("She smells like hot dogs and she has an awesome
hedgehog toy! Yea!"), but every so often I meet a shy dog
who would rather I leave right now, thank you.
Today was one of those days.
Beautiful, adorable, wrinkle-rific Coco, the 10 week
old Shar-Pei, was not excited when I showed up. In
fact, she spent the first 20 minutes hiding behind her
owner and/or the couch.

Coco has a sibling-cat who more than made up for
her less-than-warm welcome. Smokey the cat was up
for ball-play:

And she helped herself to my treat bag (yes, she even ate hot dogs):

Meanwhile, my heart was breaking because I wanted to
TOUCH THOSE WRINKLES!!!

During our lesson I tried to be as slow and calm as possible,
(not easy for a naturally spazzy person like myself) and coached
Coco's Mom from a distance. Any quick movements, sudden
noises or rapid approaches sent Coco running for cover.

"I think I can do "down", even with that lady in the room."
Coca warmed up to me a bit over the course of the lesson, but
she's not in love with me yet.
I don't think she's even in like. But I'll get her.
My killer combination of toys:

"This texture....so intriguing!"
treats:

"Did you say turkey hot dogs?"
and natural goofiness will make it happen. I hope.
Coco needs a stepped-up socialization plan to keep her skittishness
from taking root. She's very shy for such a young pup, but the good
news is that she has a dedicated owner who can devote lots of time
to the cause.
I'm can't wait for the day I walk in to Coco's house and she says
"I'm so happy you're here! Look what I can do!"
