My Maiden Voyage

Me on the Puppy Bowl set, with an Ewok.

I'll start off this silly blog with something cool (well, it's cool if you're into dogs, otherwise it's just sort of odd): I recently spent 2 days behind-the-scenes at Animal Planet's 2007 Puppy Bowl.  Just in case you need an education, Puppy Bowl is the canine version of the Super Bowl...it's a TV special that features a bunch of ridiculously cute pups playing together on a scaled-down football field for 6 hours or so.

I was the official "Puppy Acquisition Agent", meaning, I was in charge of casting the puppy players.  It doesn't sound like a big job, but it consumed me for about a month.  I had to weed through pictures of prospective pups and determine which ones were cute enough (they're ALL cute), and small enough (the list shrinks).  Let's just say the Mastiff and Great Dane pups didn't make the cut.

I managed to find over 20 cute-but-small pups, a Herculean feat, let me tell you.  But boy did I bring the cuteness!  Let me count the ways; a French Bulldog, Samoyeds, Shih Tzus, a  Border Terrier, English Bulldogs.....it was T.C.O. (Total Cuteness Overload).  The next hurdle I faced was making sure that all of the players actually showed up at the studio on game day.  My rep was on the line, big time.  Puppy Bowl is one of Animal Planet's most talked about specials, and I was in charge of the majority of the talent!

Thankfully, puppy after puppy rolled in.  My reputation was intact.

Filming was a blast.  The first day featured pups from local shelters and rescue groups. A rep from the American Human Society was there both days (required by law) and together we watched for "unnecessary roughness", and gave time-outs when appropriate.  There were a few, shall we say, over-zealous players who got pulled off the field time and again.  I can't name names, but there was one young lady with big pointy ears and white and tan fur who was quite the bully...hopefully they'll edit out some of her less-than-appropriate body-slams!

It was a really fun day, and I was honored to be a part of it.  Watch for the opening of the show when the puppies get introduced. I was squatting right next to the camera man, on the field, madly squeaking a furry mouse toy in an effort to get the pups to run right to the camera.  When you see the pups dive to the left, they're diving towards me!

The Puppy Bowl airs on Animal Planet on 2/4/07.

I'm so glad that the Puppy Bowl brought happiness to your family - puppy joy is hard to resist.  I sent your note on to my contacts at Animal Planet....it really was touching.  My best to you and your family.

As for the "ewok" - that's a little shih tzu!  Those pups were a bit out of their league with the big rough-n-tumble guys, which is why we only had them on the field for a short time....but weren't they the cutest?

    Thanks for your comments!

You did a good job selecting puppies.  Unfortunately, Animal Planet did a bad job of telling us about the puppies.  They only mentioned the name and breed of some of the puppies we saw.  I have been going crazy trying to find out the breed of the "Ewok" puppy, but no one seems to know what kind of dog it is except that it looks like an Ewok.  Do you know the breed(s)?

Just a comment to congratulate you on your boys and girls.  I have three sick people here at home - both parents (Parkinson's Disease, cancer) and my older brother (mentally disabled).  We were dog people until the folks became ill.  This was their first Puppy Bowl (my second).  To say that they loved it is a gross understatement.  thx for helping Animal Planet and Puppy Bowk support pet adoptions, and for giving my Mom a big smile today...
