My View In The Signing Of Damon Jones
As it has been reported all over the place, the Cavs signed the crown jewel of the offseason, point guard Damon Jones. I thought, since Michael Finley signed with the Spurs, that DJ would go back to Miami. But here's how I understand it. Jones and his agent wanted close to all of the Heat's $5 million mid-level expection. However, Miami didn't want to pay that much him. Damon then had no choice but to turn to the Cavs. They, in turn, gave him, as Damon says it, "an offer I couldn't refuse". That offer was a four-year, $14 million deal. I heard the interview at the press conference today. DJ said that he didn't come to Cleveland because of the point guard competition with Eric Snow. He doesn't even consider it a competition. He also called himself one of the top 5 three-point shooters....in the world! The others he mentioned were himself as a rookie, himself from years 2-4, himself from years 5-6, himself from last year, and himself now. Other one of the reasons he came to Cleveland was so he wouldn't get posterized by LeBron anymore!
But on a serious note, this is what the Cavs have wanted and needed for a long time. If you look at it, the Cavs haven't had a legitimate three-point shooting point guard since Mark Price. Now, the Cavs can go out and fill out the rest of the roster without having to worry about a starting point guard. DJ and Eric Snow will still battle it out for the starting job, but - lets be real - DJ will start unless (knocks on wood) he gets hurt. With Jones, the Cavs reach the playoffs, LeBron stays, and eveyone's happy.
Also, on another note, the Cavs signed Lithuainian draft pick center Martynas Andriuskevicius to a two-year, $800k deal. He will probably be sent to the D-League for a year or two.
If you want to listen to the Damon Jones interview, you can find it on the new pimped-out Cavs website: http://www.nba.com/cavaliers. Funny Stuff! DJ should do stand-up. But I'm glad he sticks to basketball.
