Rain, Rain, Rain

Mid-Atlantic Weather MapThe Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions were pounded with heavy rain from June 23-27, a deluge that caused flooding and at least 12 deaths (AOL News story). This NASA satellite image -- created by a process developed to measure rainfall over the tropics -- shows rainfall totals for June 23-26, with dark red indicating areas that received the most rain (150 mm or 6 inches). With the additional rain June 27, parts of the Washington area got 13.1 inches over the five-day period. View larger map and more info here. [Image credit: Hal Pierce (SSAI/NASA GSFC) ]

A record 4.05 inches of rain fell in Binghamton, N.Y., on June 27. Some 200,000 people in the Wilkes-Barre area of Pennsylvania were told to evacuate their homes June 28, because of rising water on the Susquehanna River.

Did you experience these bad rains? Have you ever seen anything like it? Floodwaters seem to me to be one of the most dangerous forces of nature. What do you think?
