Eat Local This Harvest Season

Local Produce Is Often Greener: The Harvest Moon rises this Friday, a reminder that it is harvest season for many parts of the U.S. The moon reminded me, as did two bags of fresh produce from our neighbor's produce stand.

One thing you can do is seek out fresh fruits and veggies from local farmers -- something I'd like to do more of. Buying from them helps your local economy and means you're not paying fuel and pollution costs to ship things in from far away. Getting organic goodies is even better.

You can find organic and family farms in your area on the Local Harvest site.

Apparently more college students are eating local produce.  Buying local produce may also reduce the risk of e-coli and other food-borne diseases. I should note that the FDA recently lifted its ban on most fresh spinach, saying the food warning now only covers certain brands packaged on certain dates.

Do you buy local produce? Why or why not?
