Super Bowl Gets Greener
Event Will Be Carbon Neutral for First Time: Forbes magazine recently published this article, "Greening the Super Bowl," which describes how the National Football League has more on its mind than making money at this year's Super Bowl, which takes place Feb. 4.
For the past 14 years, the NFL has had some green elements at the Super Bowl, such as recycling souvenirs and giving excess food to food banks. But this year, for the first time, the NFL is purchasing carbon offsets -- certificates to offset the amount of carbon gases generated through electricity use at the event. The league is also planting hundreds of trees to offset carbon. Some electricity for the game will come from solar panels from a company called Sterling Planet.
Whether or not you like football, this is something you have to applaud. The corporate execs at the NFL are more forward-thinking than many of our politicians in the area of carbon emissions and the environment. Maybe their actions will inspire other groups and individuals to do similar things. What do you think? Does a "green" Super Bowl matter to you?
