A Flood of Green Stories in the Media
Magazines Focus on Planet Ahead of Earth Day: For some publications, this may be the only time each year they cover environmental issues. Others may write about them more regularly, but in any case there have been a ton of cover stories about the environment lately.
As a journalist and a blogger, part of my job is to look at all of the stories out there and what's going on in current events, and then filter out the most interesting, surprising or entertaining bits and share them with you.
The firehose of stories that today's media churn out is often overwhelming for this blogger to keep up with. Over the past six weeks or so, I've gathered a bunch of magazines and links and now would like to share them. The rest of this post will be a link-fest, but I hope you find it interesting and useful.
The Business Angle: Companies Going Green
- Business 2.0's Jan/Feb issue had a cover story of "Go Green. Get Rich." In it they review humanity's nine biggest problems, from global warming to waste disposal, and showcase companies that are pursuing solutions. The issue also include a page about a wind turbine that can power your home. In the current issue, Business 2.0 features a photo gallery of eco-friendly design award winners.
- Fortune: The April 2 issue features a cover story about green companies, "Green is good." They claim American businesses are cleaner and greener. The site also has articles about DuPont and their plan to make money by helping to improve the environment, as well as how Yvon Chouinard created Patagonia and made it into an amazing business.
The Nature Angle
- National Geographic: The April issue features a covery story about "Saving the Sea's Bounty". Inside, there are four stories about the global fish crisis.
- Outside: The April issue is "The Green Issue", with profiles of 24 visionaries, a piece on a carbon-neutral cycling team and environmental book reviews and home improvement tips.
The Sports Angle
- Sports Illustrated: "Going, Going Green" I believe this was the cover story for their March 6 issue. It addresses global warming and how future sports stadiums can be built to be more environmentally friendly.
