Google Goes Green on Cars and Carbon
Will Cut or Offset Its Greenhouse Gas Emissions This Year: The way Google is going this week, pretty soon its logo will be totally green.
Yesterday morning this story came out, "Google pushes 100-mpg car", about how the company's philanthropic twin, Google.org, will award $1 million in grants and solicit bids for another $10 million in funding to develop a plug-in hybrid elecric vehicle that can get 70 to 100 mpg.
This initiative sounds like it will compete with the X Prize Foundation's Auto X Prize contest for a 100 mpg car. Lots of opportunities for car developers!
Google also turned on its huge solar power installation at its Mountain View, Calif., headquarters. CNN Money reported that "At 1.6 megawatts, Google said it's the biggest solar project on a corporate campus in the United States."
Then, in another story yesterday, "Google aims to go carbon-neutral by year-end", the Internet giant said it would voluntarily cut or offset all of its greenhouse gas emissions by the end of this year. Yahoo had previously announced it is doing the same thing. NewsCorp has said it will become carbon-neutral by 2010.
Time for other Web and media companies to catch up! Post your comments here.

Actually electric cars would not solve the problem. Although it might be cheaper to run since you would be using less gasoline, electric cars just isn't the answer to global warming. If we are to truly come up with an alternative then I think the answer may lie in the use of solar power or some other kind of alternative fuel. We are already trying to learn how to use less electricity and if we had electric cars our use would rise tremendously. There still needs to be more work done. They need to think outside of the box more. That way they can relate their ideas to what else is going on with our planet.

Why is the fact that we recently HAD a well-loved electric car in California being IGNORED! The EV1 was developed in the 90's. All who leased it loved it. They wanted to purchase the car, but suddenly all of the cars were confiscated by GM and DESTROYED! We DO NOT NEED HYBRIDS - WE NEED ELECTRIC VEHICLES WHICH CAN BE PLUGGED IN AND/OR RUN ON SOLAR POWER! Only the oil industry wants hybrids so we must continue to use gas! Everyone, please see the recent movie, "Who Killed The Electric Car?"
